Post I love Mini Coopers but this MPG finding surprised me

Went to EPA.Gov to compare...

Base Cooper-25/33-28 average
Base Yaris-29/36-32 average

Now I only would be interested in the S or John Works and this is where things really got interesting.

Cooper S- 26/34-29
Cooper John Works-25/33-28
Clubman S-26/34-29

I am honestly shocked the performance Mini's have the same/better MPG than the base Mini. It really surprised me.

Yeah, I like MINIs too and have found that interesting.

I think with engines that small, a well-managed turbo helps. Plus, doesn't the turbo version have variable-valve timing? I don't think the NA 1.6 employs any sort of variable-valve technology.

They probably have a taller top gear in the transmission, for lower cruising RPM's. That's how the Corvette gets such good highway EPA numbers.
