Is it bad to have paint work done when it's raining?

I was recently rear-ended and need to take my car into a body shop to have it fixed. Do you think it's better to wait until the weather clears up? Not sure if the humidity and moisture affects the quality of work. Thanks for any help!

Just take it their straight away. If the body shop is any decent, they will have the works and tools to make the result as good as with any weather. Wouldn't worry about the weather, just getting the car fixed.

And naturally we want to see pictures of the damage!

You'll be fine...just make sure you don't pick it up on a rainy day....the rain and overcast can keep you from seeing matching issues, etc.

Good point isthrizzy. I was trying to time it that way too.

C-man jr: Haha, there's not a whole lot to see. It was like a 5 MPH bump. The rear-left reflector is cracked and it needs to be repainted. $800+ in damage though! I was considering replacing the whole thing with an '09 rear bumper because I like the subtly revised look, but I don't think insurance will go with it.

Yep, it doesn't take much to end up with $800 of damage.

If the weather has huge impact on the paint job all body shop in Seattle would be bankrupt. Nothing to worry about it, rain or shine. Besides they all paint indoor and humidity should not have affect in controlled environment.

ya dont worry about it, paint booths are controlled for these reasons

Thanks guys. Put my mind at ease. Bringing my baby to the shop first thing tomorrow.

Not really. The principle of paint drying/curing at varying humidities is generally the same, whether it is on a car with a small scrape or on one that is nearly totalled. Pictures of the damage are probably irrelevant.

You can change the whole bumper cover for a 09 for a little more than $800+, just tell your insurance company you will pay the difference yourself.

I decided to just repair the existing bumper. Something bothered me about replacing the whole thing and having a franken-car. OCD FTW.

as long as the shops roof doesnt leak then your good to go

I8ABMR Dec 22, 2009 05:45 PM

you should be ok. I hope they can get it right. Even with good weather you can still get ****ty body work

rominl Dec 22, 2009 05:48 PM

if it's a good body shop, they should have their own oven to bake the paint, rather than just paint and leave it outside to dry. in that case, weather doesn't matter much
