Audi R8 impaled on guardrail. Driver survives ( amazingly )

Putting a shiny new Audi R8 into the guardrail is about the worst thing an owner could imagine right? Wrong. Try skewering that shiny new R8 onto the guardrail.
That's what this driver from Athens managed to do. Despite the appearance of having skewered the driver's area too, the man at the wheel lived, though his legs were seriously injured. Though we hesitate to call this driver lucky, he certainly beat the odds. Just look at that cockpit shot of the guard rail going right throught the steering column.
It's a sad sight, and not just because of the human cost. The R8 is clearly never going to see another corner, though some of its parts--particularly the engine--may live on in other projects.

Another example of an owner who had more money than driving skill. I bet most of these drivers have had no real track time or race courses. They pay big bucks for these cars and assume they will do the impossible

that is very sad. hearing six figure cars get trashed they way they do by idiotic driving or recklessness. i liked this car because of its luster and craftsmanship, but when you see pics like the ones above, it makes me grateful to have the cars that i have because i dont squander what i earned to achieve in life.

I cant believe that the driver survived. He must have hit that guard rail at a very high velocity to split it and cause it to pierce the the wheel, suspension, body, and out of the rear window.

wow, he lived with serious leg injury, i call that a miracle already

Damn! :eek2:

Holy **** those pics are indeed scary (imagine if that guard rail actually went straight through, the driver would be dead for sure).

Nevertheless, this is indeed a victory for automobile safety

i heard he lost his legs in another forum and the passenger is ok.

man thats scary to look at. verrryyy lucky he survived that

Gojirra99 12-20-09 07:49 AM

He was lucky, but you can see how he survived from the angle the rail penetrated the car, and you can also see why his legs were crushed ...

bitkahuna 12-20-09 08:47 AM

ugh that's awful. i hope he recovers.

Huh? How is this a victory for automobile safety? The man obviously survived by luck.

the guard rail did go straight through...:uh:

very lucky to survive that. You can also see that the speedometer froze at a 100.

how many mph is that?

100 km/h = 62mph.

I see more blood on the chair than I do near the floor. I would assume that the legs were crushed rather than severed. Scary stuff
