Formula 1: Toyota's Glock Misses Japan GP After Chaotic Qualifying
SUZUKA, Japan — Sebastian Vettel scored a dominant victory in Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix, but it was the chaotic qualifying the day before that dominated discussion, after Timo Glock was injured and did not take part in the race.
Three red flags interrupted the three-stage qualifying session Saturday. Glock brought out the second one when his Toyota veered off course and crashed heavily at the final corner.
The German driver immediately removed the steering wheel and tossed it onto the cowl of his car when it came to rest after slamming into an energy-absorbing tire barrier. But it took several minutes for rescue workers to remove him from the cockpit, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment.
He reportedly suffered a cut about 2 inches long on his left leg and complained of lower back pain.
Earlier, a shunt by Scuderia Toro Rosso's Jaime Alguersuari at the double-apex Degner corner had brought out the red flag. Degner also victimized Alguersuari's teammate Sebastien Buemi, Red Bull's Mark Webber and McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen.
Buemi advanced to the final stage of qualifying but crashed as the session got under way and then caused confusion when he drove his damaged car back to pit lane. Four drivers — championship leader Jenson Button and his Brawn GP teammate, Rubens Barrichello, Force India's Adrian Sutil and Renault's Fernando Alonso — were penalized five grid positions for not slowing as the caution waved for Buemi's crash. Buemi was also penalized five spots and received a reprimand.
Vettel's victory and a 7th-place finish for Barrichello narrowed the championship chase, with Button placing eighth. He now leads Barrichello by 14 points and Vettel by 16 with two races to go.
Barrichello was one of several drivers who questioned the safety of the Suzuka track.
"It is a fantastic track," he said. "It is equal [to] the best with Spa and Silverstone, but it is still very dangerous."
