Default Toyota Begins Interim Notification to Owners Regarding Future Voluntary Safety Recall

I know this is semi-old news, but the AP issued a report today saying that Lexus will officially recall 3.8 million vehicles; The issue is the old (yet still an issue) floor mat getting suck over the accelerator issue.

Here's the report from today 9/29/09:

Toyota to recall 3.8 million vehicles in company's largest US recall.

The government is warning owners of Toyota and Lexus vehicles about safety problems tied to removable floor mats.

They say the mats could interfere with the vehicle's accelerator and cause a crash.

The Transportation Department says owners should take out the floor mats on the driver's side and not replace them. A large vehicle recall is expected later Tuesday.

The consumer alert affects 2007-2010 model year Toyota Camry, 2005-2010 Toyota Avalon, 2004-2009 Toyota Prius, 2005-2010 Tacoma, 2007-2010 Toyota Tundra, 2007-2010 Lexus ES350 and 2006-2010 Lexus IS250 and IS350.
----

Editorial: I'm aware of the recent tragedy with the floor mats in San Diego County, but I'm surprised that this issue is coming up again; I was also under the impression it was just floor mats that weren't securely fasted to the floor and/or floor mats put over the top of floor mats that were securely fasted to the floor. However, are there 3.8 million vehicles with these all weather floor mats?

Toyota ordered dealers to inspect their cars for mismatched floor mats after a mat was suspected of snagging a gas pedal on a runaway Lexus in California. The August crash killed four family members.

I don't get it either. I thought it was the thick rubber all weather floor mats that were causing this not the carpeted ones with safety hooks.

Hopefully we get more details. Maybe they are keeping it vague so service department can look at the mats and decide which ones to dispose of and replace.

Default Just in -- Toyota recall 3.8M vehicles on floormats

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090929/...ota_floor_mats

WASHINGTON – Toyota says it will recall 3.8 million vehicles in the United States to address problems with a removable floor mat that could interfere with the vehicle's accelerator and cause a crash. The company says it will be the largest recall in its history. Owners could learn about the safety campaign as early as next week.

Toyota and the government warned owners of Toyota and Lexus vehicles about safety problems tied to the removable floor mats. They say the mats could interfere with the vehicle's accelerator and cause a crash.

The recall will affect 2007-2010 model year Toyota Camry, 2005-2010 Toyota Avalon, 2004-2009 Toyota Prius, 2005-2010 Tacoma, 2007-2010 Toyota Tundra, 2007-2010 Lexus ES350 and 2006-2010 Lexus IS250 and IS350.

Owners should take out the floor mats on the driver's side and not replace them.

Toyota's previously largest recall was about 900,000 vehicles in 2005 to fix a steering issue.

Aren't all of those mats held down by clamps/retainers?

Are they gonna replace those too?

dang, i was about to post this too. anyways, anyone know if we will get a notification in the mail about the floor matts? This can be really dangerous if it can cause the acceleration pedal can get stuck with bad floor matts.

maybe with a better clip or so? maybe the current clips cause the floormat to slip out of place too easily

this is retarded. It's in regards to that one wreck which might or might not have been caused because the floor mat that maybe was flipped up. I feel bad for that dude and his family, but a recall of this nature is just crazy. There was one other accelerator stuck issue that again the floor mat was blamed for it.

They should just recall the ignition key and steering wheel while they are at it. That should keep people safe. Lets just stop any human involvement from driving.

ouch, at $100 a throw to reimburse dealers plus parts, that's $380 million.

they must be very worried about the p.r. and potential class action suit damage to do this.
