Congrats to Lexus, just 20 years young...or 20 years experience. The corporate lore extends beyond giving existing buyers a more luxurious option, it really was the creation of a new luxury marque to challenge the best. The story as written has been a great success so far. Now comes the next chapter; now Lexus has become a known quantity, it has become the challenged, and it has responded in a number of ways. The hybrid lineup, vehicle expansion, F-marque. It's a very interesting time to watch Lexus.

It didn't take Lexus to prove that.

Cadillac proved, decades before before Lexus came along, that luxury didn't have to mean unreliability. Until the 1980's came along (when, admittedly, Cadillac did some truly awful stuff) the Cadillac logo "Standard of the World" actually stood for something. And Mercedes itself, the luxury brand that Lexus impacted on more than any other, had some of the world's most reliable cars before their quality started going downhill in the 1990's.

From lexusenthusiast.com
To mark the occasion, I thought it would be fitting to quote the Lexus Covenant, which is meant to influence everything the brand does:

Lexus will enter the most competitive, prestigious automobile race in the world. Over 50 years of Toyota automotive experience has culminated in the creation of Lexus cars. They will be the finest cars ever built.

Lexus will win the race because Lexus will do it right from the start. Lexus will have the finest dealer network in the industry.

Lexus will treat each customer as we would a guest in our home.

If you think you can’t, you won’t…If you think you can, you will! We can, we will.

What Lexus is starting to prove other car makers is that high performance doesnt have to mean unreliable. This is a good trend for the auto industry, it forces the Germans to make more relaible cars and I think they are doing that right now.

When Lexus started out 20 years ago with the LS400 and ES250, few people would have predicted the success that Lexus brand has achieved. BMW and MB did not even take them seriously at first since the ES 250 is nothing more than a pricier clone of the Camry and the LS was a rebadged home-market Toyota. Using the same formula Hyundai is using today, Lexus undercut BMW and MB's prices by tens of thousands and yet offer the same luxury. They were chasing MB and BMW back then and fast forward to today, they are still chasing MB and BMW in world wide sales except they have taken a big bite of of MB and BMW's market share. Thank you Lexus for kicking BMW and MB in the rear and and force these European companies to improve on quality and reliability. Happy Birthday Lexus

The LS was made as a Lexus and rebadged as a Toyota not the other way around...
