Back to a more orignal design, thank God. However, Im not to keen on the GM sourced 3.6L powerplant. My buddy has a '92 9000 with more than 200,000 miles on his 2.3L, stock turbo.
Your friend is very lucky because in general turbo engines are not the engines you want to go with if you're looking into 150k+ mile reliability. I'd go with NA every time if I was looking for a long term ownership experience.

It all depends.. Mercedes Turbo diesels of the early 80's are still running strong along with some Saab 9000 T cars.
I love the Saab Viggens of the early 90's. My Gf has a 9 3 Vert.. Very nice car and quite rare.. Saabs are not for everyone..

True, as usual in the automotive realm, there are exceptions to everything. However suffice to say since I don't have a looking glass into the future I really have no way of telling which turbo engines will stand the test of time and which ones won't... I just know that on average NA engines will out last turbo engines. Especially when it comes to which one will need its turbos rebuilt first. ()

I dunno, I think the overall longevity of turbochargers is getting better. And at the right time too.
That thing looks like a Saturn, I dont why SAAB just dont give up and close up shop. I dont see myself spending $40000 for a ugly car that is also unreliable.
Dare I say it has very "American" proportions. I think its a great improvement, I'm digging the interior but this is not going to sway people to ditch their BMW, Benz, Lexus let alone the other guys.
when I think of Saab I think of European pricing and American build quality. I will admit that this new model is handsome but I wouldnt buy that thing if they gave me the car at 40% off. I have been into cars for a long time and I have never met anyone who was ever enthusiastic about Saab. Its kind of a lame duck brand that makes poorly designed car that are annoyingly quirky at best
