Default Getting nice cars early.

People have always told me not to get nice cars or I wont have anything to look forward to.

I never understood this, is it the performance that a young driver cant handle?<--(i actually agree with that statement) the quality of the ride/interior? the badge and label that comes with the car?

Because the way I saw it if someone buys a brand new civic si for 25k or a used corvette for the same price, are they not basically on the same level?

I was thinking about this because i have friends who have EVOX's, A5's, SL55's. And they tell me about some dirty looks they get, and I was actually looking at a used m3 but I don't wanna be categorized as the "rich kid with his dads car."

I was told the same exact thing, but i figure that if you pay for it, there is nothing to worry about. At my school lots of kids drive nice cars, so at school it isn't really an issue, but with my friends from hockey and the neighborhood i get i a lot. But if i bought an audi a8 for 6 grand (actual car im looking at right now) or a 10 grand chevy cobalt, what can they say about that?

That doesn't make sense. Get a nice car if you want, who cares how young you are.

I mean, if all you've got to look forward to is a car, you're doing life wrong.

I don't know... once you start with the nice cars it's hard to stop, and there's always going to be something better, nicer, newer out there.

I'm 26... and I've had, with my own money, an S2000, 06 BMW 330i, 06 Honda Ridgeline, 07 Acura TL Type S, 07 Infiniti G35x, 07 Toyota Fj Cruiser, 07 Honda Civic Si, 08 VW R32, 07 Acura MDX, and currently an 09 Subaru WRX.... Currently looking at possibly getting an 06 M3 Competition Package

Don't get me wrong, I have my house that I'm paying the mortgage on, saving in 401K etc. That said I am somewhat jaded on cars now. Yes some people look at young guys with nice cars and think they're just ridiculous. I'd say as long as you're being good with money (saving, house, etc) who's to say you can't use your extra money as you see fit.

Continue to move up and plan on some rewards along the way as motivation.

It also just depends on the environment where you live. If your community is known to be "well off", then its probably not going to be an issue. At least that's what's its like where I live anyway..

Except for PBM i dont know how old everyone is. Because if everyone else who replied in this thread is around my age (19) than they would think the same as i do. And yes i know i wont have my parents money forever

I understand that u have better cars to look forward to.
But as far as money goes, is it possible for a 45k EvoX to me suitable for me, while a used 30k Maserati be too "good" for me?
The way i see it, if u dont mind a used car, why not get the best car you can afford?

And to hoovey I guess we are in a town that is "well off" but i commute to St. John's and anyone who's familiar with the area knows its not as up there.

The bottom line is one should not have a "nice car" & still living with mommy/daddy. Use that same money for a down payment on a house, co-op & then get that "nice car". Never put the carriage before the horse.

see same argument. If my parents say heres 25k for a civic, and i say can I buy a used M3. If they "ok" it whats the problem? they are the same price. And im in a 6 year medical program so i would be living at home for a while

If you spend your time putting weight in what others tell you to do (or what you 'should' do) it's going to be a long time before you're happy.

I think the "dirty" looks bit is because they see young people in brand new expensive cars.

I don't think it'll be that big of an issue if the car's 5 years old (or the last generation) because then in people's mind, it's already old and it's possible that you bought it from your parents or it was a hand-me-down and your parents got a new car. Or simply (depending on how old you are), you bought it with your own money.

On the flipside, I also hate people who judge on the car you drive. If you bought a new Civic for $20k vs. a Lexus for $20k, are you gonna be considered "poor" because you drive a new Civic vs. "rich" because you drive a Lexus (albeit it's used and it cost the same as a Civic).

I agree with both.

Houses are overrated. Renting tends to be better.

Anyways, as others have said, it depends on where you live/work how people will perceive your car.

It's stupid, but my workplace cited the fact I drive a Lexus as a reason NOT to give me a raise, as driving one must mean I'm pretty "well off". Shows how little they pay attention. A used '05 ES 330 does not equate to well off, especially when one can be had for less than or equal to a new Camry. The only thing they look at is the badge, and assume it must cost $50,000. My co-workers voiced that exact opinion.

Funny part is if I'd had more money and bought a Hyundai Genesis, no one would bat an eye, especially when they saw the Hyundai badge in the rear.

You only live once, so make the best of it. You never know if you'll ever have the same experience.
