Need some Help G/f's 1st car..

Well my girlfriend is 18 and just inherited a little bit of money :woohoo:
So were going to try to find her a nice used car this summer..
I like to get a jump on things:D
I want her to get an IS300 (mostly because i miss the one i had lol)
she likes it but there around 10k..
I was trying to get her interested in a 2002-2004 Jetta, they seem pretty nice/cheap. her response was the front is ugly!
She wants something that looks good, (i want something i can mod that'll look decent also) so i need some help
shes trying to stay under 8k
If not i guess ill be helping her buy her IS300..

EDIT: she wants an Automatic

If you want something that can be mod easily, stay with VW, maybe a GTI.

Anthony May 12, 2009 12:29 PM

i know nothing about vw's.. one of my budddys had a vr6..not a bad little jetta.
isnt the GTI manual?

The G Man May 12, 2009 12:39 PM

It comes in both manual and auto. VW parts are all over the place, just go on ebay and you will find a lot more parts for mods than for Lexus. There are also information and write up on mod all over the interent.

Check the reliability on that model year and make sure it is inspected by a good mechanic. Otherwise, the IS might be cheaper in the long run...

Don't intermingle your "wants" and her "wants" too much; her money, her car. If you end up influencing her too much and she gets something she has an issue with it or ends up not liking it after a while guess whose fault that is going to be...

^well said.

Now there is some good advise :) Sounds like SC400 have been around the blocks a few times. :)

What ever you do G2low, make it her final decision.

Tell her to get a Miata and call it a day :p

i hear ya..
she really wants an IS300 and i want her to get one but i told her to look at some other cars that are cheaper. Ive been trying to show her some cheaper cars but she doesnt like any of them. She wanted a 350z! but i told her how much they were, she would have to make payments, which she doesnt want to do. Looks like i might be helping her out with an IS if that is what she truly wants.
Cant seem to find any with mileage around 50-70 for under 11-12k.
been checking out my.is

Since I have been with my g/f she has bought, brand new, an '05 G35 coupe and '08 IS350. I didn't tell her to buy either, merely added input - when asked. If it were up to me, she would have bought an E46 330Ci and then a E90 335i (both of those were alternative choices), however, her money, her car. I always knew in the back of my mind if I TOLD her which I thought she should buy, and she did buy it, I'd never hear the end of it if any issues arose... haha

If she wants the IS 300, get her the IS 300. It will be far more reliable for a used car, once it has been maintained at a decent level.

Faymester May 12, 2009 04:02 PM

My vote is also IS300. Awesome car, damn near bomb proof.

If the IS is too much, how about an SC?

cliffud May 12, 2009 04:36 PM

3rd - is300.

i'm sure you'll find some deals - check out craigslist too.

Anthony May 12, 2009 04:37 PM

The main concern is her not spending all of the money she inherited.
I know the IS3 is a all around great car. My mother toataled ours, held up very well.
Obviously im not going to let her struggle w/ money. Ill just help her out with what ever she decides on.
