Not sure who told you that they were strong....The MHTs aren't that strong bro...the barrels are made in China. There is a local LS460L who we put (at his request) 21" Vendettas....they balanced terribly and we have replaced the barrels 3x so far in 6 months.
I would have never thought MHT wheels would be that problematic. They aren't cheap at all. The MHT brand has been around a long time and they have a really good quality look to them. I have always wondered why not many people buy them. The dealer who said this doesn't vouch for them but I wonder if this is an isolated event.
Another example that spending big bucks doesn't mean you get a superior wheel.
I've had 17'' ADR's for 2 yrs and no problem.... costs $550 for a set. Just got 18'' SportMax 962's for $600. I've never had problem with cheap wheels. I'd like to order a set of Volks but can't justify spending $3000 for rims alone.
I've read the thread, and basically gathered these points:
-Any wheel can crack and is prone to defect
-Price is not representative of quality
-Wheel design (monoblock, 3-piece, etc.) does not denote quality
These are all symptoms--these "bad batches" are an effect of the "good enough" mindset that manufacturers have. Spec range is too wide that when each manufacturer/supplier provides something "good enough," that "insignificant" defect builds in a way that a wheel, if completely refined/forged/cast, cut, and finished in-house, wouldn't be within reasonable spec as a finished product.
