On the way home trying to get past all the Hondas doing 30mph in the fast lane, I get off my exit and this BEAUTIFUL 1971 Camaro RS and I pace each other nearly home.
It sounded SUPERB and it was in tip top shape.
Looked just like this but was Red and white.
When I turned off onto my street, I slowed down to give the guy the customary
and he replied with
Anyone have one of these growing up?
Oh and how did I know it was a 71 RS? His tag said so.

My (older) brother and I helped my Dad build my brother a "clone" of these when he turned 16. It was a beast and a blast to drive, but I'd never think about letting my 16 yr old drive one for his first car.

For my first car I had the Pontiac (Firebird) equivalent similar to this one, but in Ascot Silver

The one you pictured (z28) is likely more rare than the one you saw... believe there are more RS and SS/RS than the Z28/RS packages

I always loved the Smokey and the Bandit 6.6l Pontiac Trans Am, there was just something about them with that paint scheme that I always liked, the white ones with the silver hawk and silver wheels looked good too. The silver ones looked nice too. The Buick Grand Nationals of the mid 80's were really nice too.

By the time these later ones were on the market, they had increased weight, balky carburators and (relatively) wimpy, detuned engines that would barely get out of their own way. HP/torque and drivability (from the factory) took an ENORMOUS drop between 1970-71 and the late 70's....not to be truly remedied until EFI (electronic fuel injection) came along in the late 1980's.

There was also a Camaro Berlinetta version which was not particularly popular and did not not sell well. I don't remember if it debuted as far back as 1971, but was definitely offered later on in the 70's.

ooo that is unfortunate ... this i did not know ... i like this one 'cause it looks coolest (IMO) lol
Oh, yes, I agree. The body flairings DID improve the looks over the early-70's Camaros. But the tightening emission controls, and the primitive attempts of engineers to deal with them, left overcomplex, detuned, wimpy engines under the hood with plumbing/hosing that looked like spaghetti.
