Subaru hasn’t sold a two door Impreza since the late 1990s but according to latest reports the AWD coupe is set for a comeback with a due date in 2010. The Impreza coupe was sold in most countries as a limited edition version of the potent STI model but it was eventually phased with the introduction of the MY01 Impreza earlier this decade.
Like its predecessor, the new model is tipped to be a high-performance premium coupe designed to tackle the likes of the BMW 3-series coupe and Nissan 350Z. According to AutoExpress, the new Impreza coupe is being jointly-developed with Toyota but it’s not basis of the new RWD sports car that will be sold by both carmakers. The coupe will however spawn a new version of the Toyota Celica and will be styled similar to the current Impreza sedan.
Power will come from a choice of two engines, a naturally aspirated 2.0L boxer engine or a more powerful 2.5L turbo unit. Power will range from about 180hp all the way up to 300hp for the flagship STI.
Base models will feature a RWD set-up but top-end versions will stick with Subaru’s symmetrical AWD system. The new coupe is set to go on sale in Japan and the U.S. in 2010 and eventually reach Europe by 2011.
Seems like MA is just speculating that it will be an Impreza coupe. I don't think it will be since the renderings show a different vehicle...one that isn't hideous. Additionally, I don't see why an Impreza coupe bound for the U.S. would be reduced to the 2.0L.
I have to say Motor Authority must be smoking something.
They're saying this isn't the sports car that Toyota/Subaru are working on together? So they're saying there are two different sport car projects? The other information seems to be ok.
What I believe will happen is:
Subaru coupe (AWD only):
Base (Impreza coupe)
WRX coupe
STI coupe
Toyota
Base (RWD only Celica)
GT4/All-Trac Celica
slim chance Toyota will have a mid level trim
The WRX coupe probably won't see the light of day either but it's possible. Subaru's whole image in the states is AWD. They make a RWD coupe and that throws their motto out the window.
I don't expect the Impreza coupe line up to look drastically different from the sedan/5-door hatch.
I'm keeping my eyes peeled out for any news on the joint sports car from Subaru and Toyota. I'm hoping to see a really nice design come out from Toyota.

It was rumored that Japan will get a Toyota and the rest of the world gets a Subaru. But I won't believe it.

Toyota needs this car. I mean I'm a Toyota loyal but I'm looking elsewhere for a car when I get out of college because Lexus/Toyota do not offer a RWD/AWD sports coupe in my price range. Even if I could afford the SC, I don't want a convertible and that thing is a luxury cruiser.
