No. BMW states they want it as close to it's Japanese competitors as possible.

But the funny thing is that Japanese 1-Liter bikes such as the Yamaha R1 or Suzuki GXS-R 1000 are near 160 hp, which each cost at about $11k. A 190 hp bike calls for drastic changes in tuning and chassis modifications.

To bump it up an extra 20-30 horsepower, you would need either (a) a bigger engine such that of the Hayabusa (1.35-Liters, 194 hp, $12,000), or (b) a completely differently tuned 1-Liter bike with chassis modifications, such that of the Desmosedici RR (1000cc, 200 hp, $75,000).

If BMW wants to keep this at 1000cc (which it will) AND still have 190 hp, it's gonna be one expensive bike...

so what you're saying is that it will perform better than the jap bikes, but considerably more expensive>???

I do several track days a year and have YET to meet someone that can outride a stock R1, GSXR1000, CBR1000R, or ZX-10R. Anything more is only useful for the likes of Rossi and such......

I didn't say it will perform better.

Those Japanese bikes are more than track worthy against Ducati and BMW. The YZF-R1, GSX-R1000, and CBR1000RR are more than capable of doing 0-60 mph in about 2.8 seconds, just like the 1098; amongst other factors such as weight and handling.

(Check out this article for a very thorough comparison of all 5 major 1L bikes...)

However, the extra hp and exclusivity are always something to brag about. I mean, the BMW should be able to beat those 0-60 times by 0.3 seconds...

i was just thinking that. the tail and the gap between the headlights scream R6 to me.... hard sell if this is gonna be in the DUC price range... i know id rather be hearing that DUC grumble if i had the money for one. ill stick to my little gsxr600 for now.

BMW reveals S1000RR in race colours

For the first time BMW has revealed its S1000RR superbike in race trim and race paint scheme at the Cologne Motorcycle Show.

BMW claims the 1000cc inline-four engine will kick out a true 190bhp and weigh less than 190kg when it goes on sale late in 2009. If BMW is to be believed then that means it will weigh 10kg less than its Japanese competitors and produce 10bhp more power!

BMW has confirmed the bike will have ABS and traction control when it goes on sale.

Ruben Xaus and WSB-veteran Troy Corser will be racing the BMW S1000RR in WSB for 2009.

the problem is that it's german; so it will have all the usual weird german engineering traits that i hate! just like german cars are great except for their refusal to make thing easy and inexpensive. guess that's why we drive lexus' and ride japanese bikes!
