Luxury Institute Survey 2008: Most Prestigious Brands 1) Porsche 2) Lexus 3) Mercedes

Porsche retains #1 for several years in a row, Lexus moves up from #2 tie in 2007 with Mercedes, and up from #3 in 2006.
Survey methodology:
As before, a multimillionaire's club only survey...
NEW YORK, NY--(MARKET WIRE)--May 7, 2008 -- High net-worth consumers rated Porsche the most prestigious luxury automobile in the 2008 Luxury Brand Status Index (LBSI) survey from the independent New York City-based Luxury Institute (www.LuxuryInstitute.com). Respondents who would recommend Porsche say, "They are world-class sports cars for the true connoisseur," and, "They have a good reputation for performance." Lexus and Mercedes ranked second and third respectively.
Survey methodology:
The proprietary Luxury Brand Status Index (LBSI) survey is the only measure of the prestige of leading brands among wealthy Americans. A national sample of 1,642 wealthy American consumers, with an average income of $349K and average net-worth of $3.7 million, was surveyed online. Survey results are weighted to match demographic and net worth profiles of the same audience according to the latest Survey of Consumer Finances from The Federal Reserve.

I never understood how these surveys worked. What are these rankings based on?
Lexus is a good brand, but ahead of Mercedes and below Porsche? Huh? So where's BMW? Rolls Royce? Bentley? Jaguar?

Rolls. Bentley. Bugatti are ultra-luxury. Plus people making on average $360k and have over $3.7 mil do not really have the means to buy/drive around in those. True they could get a Bentley Continental GT, that is pretty much it.

Well maybe in Canada it is not the same as the United States... There are some people who spend 1/4 the value of their house in a single car like a Lamborghini LP640...Many Americans are ostentatious by buying things like cars, jewelry, clothing, yet skip out on the thing that shows off wealth probably the most, the house.

I rather like to see what are the top five without the actual order because I think this rankings would change from poll to poll. I personally do not like to consider Porsche as a luxury brand, because I see Porsche as more a performance icon than what luxury items the car has. And because of lack of a sedan in its lineup, Porsche couldn't be a geniune luxury brand in my mind. I believe that BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, Jaguar and Cadillac would be the top five to come to mind when asked about luxury automobile brands. Rolls-Royce and Bentley are too exclusive to be considered mainstream luxury brands, just like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Aston Martin.

Its interesting to me that Lexus isn't that old, yet I have always associated that name with refined luxury.
We are on our second Lexus, plus my brother has one too. They are great. In the purchase of the past two we have cross shopped BMW and MB. Each time we have left the MB dealer wondering why people fork of the extra money for one. To us anyway, the interior as well as the drive is not luxurious as Lexus is. And I think that their sales results prove that.

as much as i like to hear lexus beating mercedes, i think most people would agree with me when i say that the luxury icon for the masses is:
1) Mercedes
2) BMW
3) Lexus
4) Audi
5) Infiniti/Acura
i dont even know where to place Cadillac. lol. nonetheless, great news for lexus
