Very close.....SICK almost has it. The word originally comes from an old French term for a two-seat, roof-enclosed horse-drawn carriage. Like in America, where the term "horseless carriage" was adopted for the automobile; in France (and later in other countries, especially America) the term "coupe" was adopted for early two-seat/two-door cars. Later, it was expanded to include all hardtop or sedan cars (even those with back seats)with two side doors.

A modern tendency in auto design is to try and design 4-door sedans with coupe styling...the Mercedes CLS, with its Peek-a-Boo windows, is probably the best example. And, another variant of this theme are vehicles like the Saturn Ion "Coupe" and Mazda RX-8, with their small rear half-doors for easier rear-seat access.

Hi:

I'm new to the forum and planning to replace my Acura Legend 2-door "coupe". I happened to note the various cars shown in PhllipMSPT's in response to XeroKOOL's definition of a coupe body style.

Can anyone identify the various models shown under "Real" and "Fake" coupes in the post?

Thanks!

Thats actually not the case. If it was then most of the coupes on the market wouldnt be coupes.

A coupé or coupe (from the French verb couper, to cut) is a closed car body style, the precise definition of which varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, and over time. Coupés are often hardtopped sports cars or sporty variants of sedan (saloon) body styles, with doors commonly reduced from 4 to 2, and a close-coupled interior (i.e., the rear seat placed further forward than in a standard sedan) offering either two seats or 2+2 seating (space for two passengers in the front and two occasional passengers or children in the rear). Before the days of motorized vehicles, the word referred to the front or after compartment of a Continental stagecoach.

The first one is a Ruf technically.

We have spoken about how confusing the G35/G37/Altima is as that is an Altima coupe.

Coupe: 2 doors, hard top, not a hatch.

My own car for example. - - - (credit of photo to kaydee)

There's no such thing as a four door coupe. Four doors and it's a sedan.

It's like saying powered water, inflatable dart board, a solar flashight that works at night...come on keep it real...

Oh yeah, the SC 300/SC 400 isn't a fake coupe either...

So why the redundancy of "2 door" coupe if all coupes are 2 door?

If you really want to know legally read the registration from the DMV

Not I. I would just refer to it as Coupe or Sedan. I don't say 4-Door Sedan either.
