I expected the hybrids to be at the top of the list, however, I am extremely surprised that a few of the cars made it on there. Hats off to Lexus for taking up half the top ten slots!

Funny how Lexus can make its V8 cleaner than the other I4 and V6 engines...

If you look at the "Air Pollution" Value that they show in the slideshow, the Hybrids have a score if 9 while all the other vehicles are at 7. Air pollution isn't just about Carbon Footprints... it's also about... mmmmm... something else that I don't know.

I wouldn't call the Lexus IS250 a luxury car. It is too small, too cramped inside, and too firm-riding. Ditto for the Audi A3, Volvo C30, BMW 128, and BMW Z4. I don't know why these cars are on a "luxury" car list. What they are is luxury NAMEPLATES.

Something is also wrong with the rankings. The lowest-polluting car, the Audi TT, at 7.1 annual tons, is at #4. In fact, the rankings from #1 to #5 are all off somewhat. The #2 Lexus GS 450h and #3 LS600h L both are tied with vehicles MUCH lower in the rankings......#7 and #9.

IMO, the company that compiled this "list" needs to toss it in the trash and start over.

Maybe it is carbon footprint per dollar amount? Who knows. Anyway, odd to see the G37 Coupe up there but not the 3.5 G35 Sedan?

It's only because for some unknown reasons the owner of eGMCarTech.com chose not to include the actual Air Pollution Scores in his copied article. Read the original article on ForbesAutos.com to understand the EPA Air Pollution Score system.
http://www.forbesautos.com/advice/to...ars-story.html

"The Air Pollution Score represents the amount of health-damaging and smog-forming airborne pollutants a vehicle emits. Among these are hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and formaldehyde. Scoring is based on a 10-point scale, with 10 representing a zero-emissions vehicle, meaning higher numbers are better.

Carbon Footprint ratings estimate the tons of greenhouse gases each vehicle generates per year based on 15,000 miles of driving. These emissions include carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane, and other compounds believed to be major contributors to global warming. One gallon of gasoline converts to 20 pounds of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere.

The EPA’s ratings cited in our lists assume emissions generated not just by burning fuel while driving, but from fuel production and refining as well. Scoring is expressed in the number of tons of greenhouse gases produced each year, meaning lower scores are better.

The EPA considers a vehicle's Air Pollution Score to be more important because it is directly related to air quality, and thus has an immediate impact on human health. Therefore, we use it as the basis for our ranking. Carbon Footprint rating is included for every vehicle but was primarily used to break ties in our rankings."

The actual amount of pollution, of course, from each car, even apart from official "lists", will depend on many factors, including driving habits, engine/vehicle condition, and what kind of gas you use.

Well when it stopped the engine wasn't running so no wonder it was quiet.

But yes, I think the RX400h is Lexus' BEST hybrid.

Let's see... the web site says: Burning one gallon of gasoline emits 20 pounds of CO2. So 600 gallons of gas a year (at 20mpg that's 12000 miles) means 12000 pounds of CO2 or, er, 6 tons?

I think the list is a pile of crap. A back yard's decomposing waste probably puts out more CO2.
