Insurance question: hit and run...
 

I'm kind of angered I even have to ask this question but, if my car was involved in a hit and run (someone hit me) and I make a claim to get repairs, how does this affect my insurance? I'm pretty sure I'm going to hear that it will most likely go up but I know there are some insurance experts on here so I thought I would get some solid opinions. If my premium goes up, I will not pay to fix the damage as I dont find it justifiable for this car anymore. The repair, judging off of past repairs, would run ~$1500 and I carry a $1000 deductible. So in the end, I may just say f$%& it anyway.

The reason this angers me is that not only was this a hit and run incident (my car was parked) but it happened parked right in font of my damn house. I was not home at the time when this happened. And yes, I've gone up and down the street looking for damaged cars. In my own neighborhood, in front of my own house... To me it's just a huge, WTF?!?!

Oh yeah, I've neglected to mentioned that the car just got a new bumper and very minor body work about two weeks ago from being rear-ended in February. So this adds a bit to the frustration... Ok, now I am just venting a ranting, so I'll stop now.

Most insurance companies don't consider a hit-and run to be a chargeable point on your record for a premium hike, especially if a police report is made, but check with your company or agent just to make sure. In some cases, you may even be able to make a claim inder comprehensive, which covers damage to your car while it is sitting still......by law, comprehensive claims cannot result in premium hikes.

But I'm with you.....if you have $1000 deductible on both collision and comprehensive, which is higher than most people carry, you might want to just cover it yourself and save the insurance hassles.

A police reprt is needed when file a hit-and-run claim, or it will be chargeable to you, thus, premium goes up.
A hit and run is not chargeable, but under condition that you filed a police report.

I did not make on right away as I did no realize the damage until the next day, I understand I can go down to the police station and make one at any time, would this normally be ok, or does it have to be made immediately?

Black, not all companies are the same. I work in insurance as well and State Farm (not my employer) will not require a police report. Contact your agent as soon as possible if you are going to file a claim.

oh the memories from when it happened to me. I filed a claim and no police report was needed nor did it affect my rates. (But I also have my home and other car insured through them)

Anyway, I still suggest to get a police report tho...
and yes, you can file it later.

^^ That has been my experience as well with USAA. No police report is bad with them.

Police report is for preventing frauds...
people can hit the car themselves and claim under hit-and-run, right?? :sad:
