Default Mini unleashes two new tuned 2008 Coopers (JCW & Hamann)

Get the Racing Feeling: John the Cooper Works Tuning kit for the new MINI Cooper S.

The International Automobile Salon in Geneva (March 8th - 18th 2007) is the setting for the world premiere of the John Cooper Works Tuning Kit for the MINI Cooper S. From mid-2007, what is already the most powerful version of the compact premium model will be given an additional power boost under its bonnet. With the John Cooper Works Tuning Kit for the MINI Cooper S, the output of the 1.6 litre twin scroll turbo engine is increased to an impressive 141 kW/192 bhp, with maximum torque up to 250 Newton metres in the engine speed range between 1,750 and 5,000 rpm. With the overboost function, the torque level can even be increased temporarily to 270 Nm for powerful acceleration in the engine speed range from 1,750 to 4,500 rpm.

And the MINI brand has even more John Cooper Works components on offer for fans of the new MINI Cooper S - enough to quicken the pulse and put motor racing passion into everyday driving. These include a sports chassis, perforated brake discs for the front axle of the MINI Cooper S and 18-inch light alloy wheels. These options can be ideally combined with numerous other features from the John Cooper Works accessory range which equally enhance the car's sporting spirit: with the aerodynamics packages in body colour, the John Cooper Works sports seats, the John Cooper Works sports steering wheel and selected equipment components made of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic. Not only is the dynamic potential of the new MINI Cooper S increased but also its charismatic sporty appeal.

Racing expertise for more fun in everyday driving.

The John Cooper Works Tuning Kit for the MINI Cooper S includes components whose development is derived directly from expertise gained from motor racing. This most powerful version of the new MINI thus carries on a tradition which dates back to the legendary racing success of MINI and John Cooper Works in the sixties. The John Cooper Works Tuning Kit for the MINI Cooper S consists of a sports exhaust system, a sports air filter and an electronic engine management system optimised for greater power efficiency. The resulting package fires the MINI Cooper S to new performance peaks and even greater driving fun.

Perfect look for a sports vehicle.

And the sporty look of the new MINI Cooper S can be further refined with the appropriate ingredients from the John Cooper Works collection. The sports suspension not only ensures even more agile handling but also lowers the suspension by 10 millimetres. In keeping with this, John Cooper Works provides an aerodynamic body kit in body colour - consisting of a front and rear apron and side sills - as well as several versions of 18-inch light allow wheels. The "Double Spoke" design has a particularly agile look and is new for 2007. The largest wheel authorised for the new MINI (dimensions 7J x 18) has low-section tyres sized 205/40/18 with runflat properties.

The perforated brake discs are also borrowed from classic racing technology. And finally, numerous equipment components in carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic give the MINI a new visual kick. The high-tech Formula 1 material is used for John Cooper Works trim panels for the front air inlet, exterior mirrors and tailgate handle - not made exclusively for the MINI Cooper S but also available for other model variations of the new MINI generation.

The new MINI: individuality is the key focus.

A John Cooper Works roof spoiler with carbon spoiler is also available for the new MINI. John Cooper Works leaves its mark in the interior of this racy little car, too: the John Cooper sports seat (ED: not available for the US market) provides an attractive appearance and optimised lateral holding for dynamic travel. And if you want to be absolutely sure of having a good grip on the new MINI at all times, you will opt for the John Cooper Works sports steering wheel. It is optionally available with a cover in leather or Alcantara - a stylish touch of individual flair!

Alternatively, the Original MINI accessory range offers a single-section roof spoiler which can be finished in body colour. Even greater individuality is provided by additional headlamps, illuminated entry sills with free choice of lettering and a wide range of roof decor variations. In addition to the popular motives "Union Jack" and "Chequered Flag" - which are also available for the mirror covers and door handle trim elements - the roof of the MINI can also be decorated with the MINI lettering or even the markings for a helicopter landing spot ("Heliport" motif).

The Original MINI accessory programme also offers MINI fans the opportunity to increase the comfort and functionality of their vehicle. The MINI interface for integration of Apple iPod models means you have just the music selection you want as you drive. MINI-specific roof and rear carrier systems enable the safe transport of bicycles, skis, snowboards or roof boxes. The especially useful options also include high-quality textile floor mats, a rear protective cover, a luggage compartment tub and folding sun blinds. No matter whether sporty or practical: thanks to the extraordinary variety of the individualisation options available, every MINI is one thing above all else: unique.

Mini with Maxi Tuning:
New Mini with the individual HAMANN touch

* Sporty aerodynamics kit and finish in flag design
* Sports silencer
* Coilover suspension
* Three wheel designs in 17" and 18"
* Comprehensive range of interior accessories made of aluminum and exposed carbon-fiber

The original Mini was known among other things for its go-kart-like handling. BMW has managed to transport precisely that into the new age, with the new edition of 2001. And the recently launched 2006 generation once again sparkles with the typical Mini characteristics. And HAMANN has of course once again taken on the current model. The Brit from Bavaria not only looks different after its visit to the health farm in Laupheim. The HAMANN Mini also sounds better, and drives with even more agility.

One thing is clear: you will attract attention with the Mini, even in standard trim. The exterior of the Mini could however convey a little more sportiness. HAMANN can help out in this respect, clothing the little runabout in some sporty gear. The HAMANN aerodynamics kit includes a front spoiler to reduce lift, a pair of side sills with integrated, brushed aluminum doorsills, and a two-piece rear diffuser. Visually equipped in this way, it would not look out of place among the starters in the Mini Cup. The Mini draws even more attention as a result of the HAMANN flag-design decoration. This decoration is available in silver, anthracite or white. You can even apply it yourself, and it is available for the sides, the hood and the roof. Customers can order the components together (at a discount) or individually.

17" and 18" wheels

HAMANN offers three attractive wheel designs for the Mini. The HM4 is a 17" model, which is a handsome one-piece alloy wheel with five spokes, finished in silver, and has the look of a multi-piece wheel. The PG4 design not only looks like it; it actually is a multi-piece wheel. The 18" five-spoke wheel sports a polished lip. Once again a one-piece wheel, but nevertheless boasting an elegant multi-spoke design, we have the ANNIVERSARY I. With its silver finish and its high-gloss polished INOX stainless steel lip on the outer rim flange, the ANNIVERSARY I is available in 18" form, combining great looks with a practical solution as the stainless steel lip is exchangeable and can easily be replaced in the event of damage. Available wheel/tire combinations:

* HM4: front / rear 8.0J x 17 Tires: front / rear 215/40 ZR17
* PG4: front/rear 8.0J x 18 Tires: front / rear 215/35 ZR18 or 225/35 ZR18
* ANNIVERSARY I: front / rear 8.0J x 18 Tires: front / rear 215/35 ZR18 or 225/35 ZR18

Improving the sound of their car is one of the most important tuning measures for many drivers. So for sound fetishists HAMANN is offering an impressive twin-pipe sports rear silencer, with two round stainless steel tailpipes (each 90 mm in diameter). A sportier air intake sound is created by the HAMANN sports air filter, which is available for both the Cooper and Cooper S versions of the Mini.

Even though the Mini already has very good handling, HAMANN saw a need for action in this area too. HAMANN height-adjustable coilover suspension promises even greater agility. It comprises four sports shock absorbers and four springs. The suspension can be lowered by up to 50 mm at the front, and by up to 30 mm at the rear. Thanks to its lower center of gravity, the Mini can be pushed through the corners even more like a go-kart than ever.

Comprehensive interior refinement

Friends of individual looks have virtually free rein in the interior of the Mini. HAMANN doorsills made of brushed aluminum invite you to step inside this small car. The HAMANN Sports gear **** and the hand brake lever are also made of aluminum. Exclusive, black HAMANN foot-mats make the Mini even cozier, in addition to which HAMANN offers two interior sets made of exposed carbon fiber. Set 1 is made up of cockpit panels, cladding for two outer ventilation ducts – one on the left and one on the right, the steering column, the airbag and the centrally located instruments, as well as a cover panel for the tachometer and the passenger airbag. Set two includes the handbrake lever, the decorative ring for the drinks holder, the surrounds for the gearshift gate, door handles and frames, the speaker rings, door trim panels (4 items) plus B-pillar cladding.

HAMANN will of course also modify any Mini according to the individual wishes of the customer. For example, elaborate leather upholstery and trim are available in various colors, or such items as multimedia conversions.

Glad they use turbochargers now as many of my friends actually held off on the supercharged S version, in anticiption that the power would get boost later and it would be easier to modify.

Boutique Minis!

Brake rotors and coilovers are a nice start, but I want to see a "twin" Mini like those modded in the UK back in the late '60's by John Cooper himself, and briefly campaigned in rallys in Europe.

The Twin Minis had the back seat removed and a second engine, drivetrain, and "front" suspension installed - backwards - in the rear. Simply replacing the camshaft with a "mirror image" grind, and a little fiddling with the ignition timing to allow it to turn in the opposite direction, produced a car with DOUBLE the stock horsepower (already considerable in the Mini-S, if you consider power-to-weight ratios), and four-wheel drive. Synchronizing the clutches and shifters to a single set of controls was always dicey, but not impossible. In the hands of a professional driver, these tiny cars (remember the original Mini was only 2/3 the size of the modern version) would FLY.

A friend drove one of these in the UK in club races and as a part of the JCW team. His tales of those adventures could keep you bent double with laughter for hours. A wee Scot, George had driven for Triumph and a number of other "works" teams, both as an amateur and a pro. A skilled engineer, he was not just a great driver, but a real asset to the development team. Perhaps one contributor to his success was his powerful but compact build - a real asset when driving a car in which you are a significant part of the power-to-weight equation.

I've seen his home movies of racing, including one unforgettable scene (shot by a newsreel cameraman) at a dirt-road rally where powering out of a tight corner, George downshifted to second gear and managed to engage second up front and fourth in the rear. When he dumped the clutch(s), the little car neatly flipped on its back, executing a perfect "Ricky Bobby" straight at the camera. The cameraman happened to be in pretty close, and to paraphrase George's narration of the scene, "all you could see behind the windscreen was this wee little man in a big helmet that was suddenly filled with EYEBALLS!"
