Default Toyota keen to share plug-in hybrid battery tech

Friday 2 March 2007

Toyota is the latest company reported to be working on a plug-in hybrid vehicle, and it may even collaborate with other carmakers in developing new battery technology to power its new car. Toyota’s president of its North American operations, Jim Press, revealed during an interview with Reuters that it was currently “doing consumer research right now as well as product development.”

Green enthusiasts have already modified they’re own Prius hybrids so that they can be charged at home using a regular electrical outlet, but the auto industry is yet to release any production model. Press admitted the major hold back at the moment is the development of next-generation battery technology, and that Toyota is keen to work with its competition.

Toyota will be showcasing an all-new hybrid concept car at next week’s Geneva show, which could possibly be a preview of its first plug-in hybrid model.

Sounds interesting. Sounds probable. Sounds viable.

But I still don't see plug-ins making a comeback...

Super. So now we can charge the cars' batteries using household electricity... which is generated by buring massive amounts of coal. Yeah, that's "green".

But in reality, who really cares about it, its all about people's greediness and how much they pay for gas. Who cares about the greenhouse gas

I hope you realise that all energy conversion processes are not equally efficient.

Agreed. And considering Lexus markets its hybrids as 'no inconvenience of having to plug it in"...

Default I just had a thought...could this be possible??

You know how you have your electric tooth brushes....they charge simply by having the tooth brush within 1 inch of the base or just put it in the designated slot. Could they have the same technology for electric "current plug in cars"

They way it would work is if the car parks in the garage and a wireless electric current is sent to it to charge. Eventually all technology drops in price and it could be available at all of our every day locations such as parking lots, garages, and everywhere you could imagine.

I work for the Electric Company in NYC. We get most of our power from Niagra Falls Power Plant (uses the water fall to generate Power) which is in very very very high demand, and hard to find... Nuclear Power is starting to fade away becuase of political reasons.. Look at INDIAN POINT in Buchanan NY. They are desperately trying to get rid of that. I dont think bypassing one fuel for another is the answer (gas - electric) It is nice for a temp solution.. but more money should be poured into alternative replenishable-non harmful sources of energy.
