A guy in my neighborhood just bought his wife a 650i convertible YESTERDAY. Was driving out of our development and someone going too fast in the opposite direction this evening around a curve on the wrong side of the road caused the 650i owner to go off the road and then lost control and hit a tree and then bounced back across the road to end up like this.
Remember this car is 1 day old.

The BMW assistance called him immediately because the air bags had gone off, and said they'd send a tow truck. 3 hours later no tow truck and I had to leave him there in the pitch dark still waiting for the truck to show up.
Multiple choice:
A) It'll buff right out.
B) Safety system works (note the airbag and pop-up hoops deployed).
C) Is Mr. "just bought his wife a 650i convertible YESTERDAY" looking to adopt a 30 year old son?
or
D) Glad everybody is ok.

So much for BMW Assist. Maybe the tow truck met the same fate further down the road.
BTW Bit, I can see your Explorer ...

How fast can that golf cart go???
Seems like both drivers are guilty are driving a little too fast.
Nevertheless, if that 6 was driving if even less than 25mph (in a residential area), damage shouldn't have been that bad. Airbags don't deploy at low speed collision, right?

Anyway, do any Bimmerphiles here know if airbags won't deploy below 25mph or some other speed? That would be VERY useful information. Not only did the wheel airbag go off, but so did the driver's side one too.
His doberman was in the back seat (yeah, in a new $90K car
) and must have had quite a shock too.

sorry , couldn't resist. Some googling revealed some sources that airbags deploy around 12 mph into a fixed wall. http://www.aorc.org/faq.asp.
I don't buy it b/c I know/heard of friends/acquaintances where they were involved in accidents going around even 20-25 mph and none of them had their airbags deployed.
Still losing traction and bouncing off other wall..........at low speed.......just hard to believe. An traffic accident investigator would be perfect for re-creating this
