What a necrobump!

Let's use visuals:

2005 Audi A4 and 2007 A8

2015 Lexus NX & RC-F

If that's the case, then, Dave, why not toss in your own $.02 on the Audi grilles?

Thought they were risky and not so great at first, grew to like them over time. Now I couldn't imagine an Audi without one.

They've improved over time and Audi has evolved the other parts of the front fascia with complementary styling every generation

Now you can take everything I said with 'Audi' in it and insert 'Lexus' as well and I'd post the same thing .

The Audi grills still look good to me, better than most cars out there....better than Lexus.
But what I like about our spindle is its boldness. Its uniqueness. It catches the eye and holds on to it.

Here you go. It is all up to each individual's taste.

Audi has toned down and refined their grilles more recently. The next A4, A5, and A6 will all have smaller grilles with added angles along the top to break it up even more. Only negative there is it's getting very close to Ford's grille. Oh well.

Now the question is, when will big, gaping grilles fall out of style? It's not a question of IF, but WHEN. Styles change and evolve constantly, and I'd guess around 20 years from 2005 will be the big turnaround.

When electric vehicles are more mainstream and en vogue, the grill will dissipate to a minimum, acting as a company's signature design rather than a window for cooling a gas-guzzling engine.

I agree. As people (and car designers) tire of covered-up grills (like we have on the Chevy Volt and Lexus HS hybrids) they will likely start to get smaller.
