Although a number of things can affect acceleration times, such as air temperature and density, tire brand and PSI's, road surface and gradient, number of miles on a new engine, weight of driver and the load in the car, driver technique, etc.....yes, a 1.5-second 0-60 difference does seem a litle large.

That was the golden age of Japaniese sports cars.

They took on Germans and Italians with vengeance!

They were all twin turbos, something you don't see anymore, they were all fast even for today standards let alone 10 years ago and they will always be missed.

RX-7, Supra, 3000GT, 300ZX is something Japan should be proud of

My fav is 3000GT VR4. I am techno freak and that car offered everything from TT, AWD, AWS, Active Aero, ECS to contain brutal 320hp and 6spd tranny. Amazing car!!

No...they were not all turbo or twin-turbo. All except the RX-7 had normally-aspirated versions as well. And the Acura NSX, to my knowledge, never had a turbo version at all.

You forgot another of the 3000GT's features...if I am not mistaken, the convertible had a folding metal top at a time when it was unique and almost no other car had that feature.

I still love that "space-ship" design and can remember the commercial where it pass by that Porsche

Just wished they should've used different wheels on their TT versions.

My Mother In Law just upgraded her 1990 300ZXTT to a 2004 G35 Coupe last year. I spent a few days with the Z (detailing it before selling), and I was impressed with it. It wasn't as quick as my 1993 RX-7, and seemed a little heavy when comparing handling, but for a 14 year old car, it looked great, was VERY strong, and was a lot of fun to drive. Her car was immaculate, 1 owner, 65K original miles, all stock (except for stereo upgrades), and she got $11K for it.

Actually, the 300ZX Turbo had Nissan's rear "HICAS" system, which allows for additional toe-in or toe-out under certain handling conditions.

This was problematic in some cars and would create some vagueness in turns. In fact, I was riding in it one night (my friend John was driving) and we took an off-camber turn at a high rate of speed... the back end swung out, he corrected, then ithe front tures hooked-up and spun us around the other way. Fortunately, it was a nice wide street and there was no ncoming traffic. When the car came to a stop (facing the correct way on the opposite side of the road, about 12 inched from the curb), we sort of sat there in stunned silence for a moment. Ooops!

Stillen made a "HICAS delete" kit that disabled the rear system and replaced two of the toe rods with heim-jointed links- really helped the overall feel.

On my friend John's '91 300ZX Turbo automatic, we did an exhaust and Jim Wolf intake, ECU and "boost jets" (controlled the wastegate diaphrams). The car put down 290 hp at the rear tires. It ate Mustangs and Z28s for lunch. This car was FAST on the freeway, and the auto trans really kept the turbos spooled between gear changes. I had an opportunity to buy that car about four years ago... could have bought it for about $7500. I should have!!

The Turbo 300ZX had a 4 wheel steering system called HICAS (High Capacity Actively Controlled Steering) which would sense vehicle speed, how hard and fast the steering wheel turn, and steer the rear wheels. It would apply counter steer at first and then it would turn the same direction as the front wheels. It was designed mainly for high speeds of 120mph or over and was not featured on NA models. Many people found the system intervention unpredictable and sometimes dangerous and there were aftermarket parts designed to disable the system. I believe they removed HICAS on later models. HICAS was also featured on the Infiniti Q45. The Honda 4WS system that debuted on the Prelude was mechanical and reacted just from steering wheel movement. In Europe and possibly Japan you could get a Turbo 300ZX with rear seats which unfortunately was not available in America.

great car in its time... and still a respectable car now.. i was close to getting one and i still might eventually end up getting one for fun... too bad it was a heavy beast... damn near 3600 lbs... front heavy, and a cramped engine bay. the 3000GT was a heavier beast... 4000 lbs... the rx-7 is a classic car... too bad they arent reliable at all... the supra was heavy as well... front biased.. but reliable as hell. also had amazing power potential and IMO the best looks followed by the FD. the FD was the funnest car though IMO.

300zx is one of those classic cars from our time. I remember when one of my boys had one. He had it up to 500hp. Thing sounded like a jet. Too bad he sold it.

One thing i never really liked about the 300z was the partial door frame. It was almost as if they wanted to but couldnt make it work.

This was so weird, I sw 2 modded 300ZXs yesterday, I ususally see none, let alone a modded one.

i always loved the styling of the 300ZX. regardless of the year it was a class design for it's timeframe. i had a 280ZX back in college and loved taking the T-Tops off in the MD/DC/VA spring and summer. after graduating i planned on stepping up to the 300ZX. it's interesting to see the comparison to the Stealth R/T TT because oddly enough, i opted for the Stealth when i had to choose between the two.
my intro to the Mitsu platform came from my pops when he had a turbo Mitsu Starion RWD that i used to love driving. that was a helluva car back in 89. i used to kill RX7s, 944s and NA 300ZXs in that car all the time. then i later test drove the stealth and got hooked instantly. they were definitely not as common as the 300ZX and i wanted something everyone else didn't have. it was well worth it. i still give the 300ZX extra style points for the T-Tops though and also for being better supported in the aftermarket scene.
