Diesel Trucks, what is your preference and why?
I have plenty of power and gears. It has a 3.92 axle ratio, and the ZF 8HP trans that my truck has is now being put into the 2500's because it is so robust. Truck did just fine from Vegas to DFW at 65mph. Trans never got over 190F. The limitation in my truck is literally the suspension. Even with airlift bags at 50 PSI, I was sagging hard.
Whatever I buy will go directly to my buddy's diesel shop for full emissions delete and tune, from the dealer. I am not messing around with that garbage. I wont buy a ram from 2004. The interior's from back then make me want to barf, and I don't want old truck issues. I want to push the button and go, with ventilated seats, android auto, and modern luxuries.
It will still tow like a half ton, and cost more than a 3/4 ton. The MSRP is starting at $105,000. As shown in top trim, will undoubtedly touch $120,000. I can buy a gently used 3-4 year old diesel 3/4 ton with under 40k miles for $50-55k. the limitation is not the power, its the brakes and suspension. Just because you CAN tow 14k with it, doesn't mean you should. Honestly, anything over 10,000lbs is too much for any half-ton to do safely unless the operator has lots of experience. It will have soft-riding 4 link rear suspension, 22 or 20 inch wheels with P-rated tires, and normal half-ton truck brakes.

We used to tow (around town) a tracked skid steer with all attachments (had to be at least 13k load + all-steel trailer (~2500lbs) with … 2008 Tundra😅. Pulling the load? Piece of cake…. Stopping? Proceed with caution - even with trailer brakes.
Yes - it was illegal…. No, thankfully we never got busted.

I once pulled 10,000lbs of gravel in a 4,000lb dump trailer with a half ton (not this one). Someone pulled out in front of me. I didn't hit them, but I came so close I had to change shorts. I will never pull anything that heavy with a half ton again.
