General Car Conversation 2025 - Part 2
Picked up the BMW today. It drove normally during the 90 mile trip back to my house. Trans temp never exceeded 165 F.
Parked it in my driveway, pressure washed it to get all the grime and dirt off and then pulled it into the garage to be greeted by "Drivetrain Malfunction". I turned it off and ran the codes and got nothing. Started it back up and the warning was gone. I'm hoping it was just from the washing making a sensor think something was off.
I'm on my way back to Utah in my truck. I'll diagnose the car more when I get back to Vegas. My new downpipe was in the garage waiting for me. Going to take it to my usual shop to have the oil changed and downpipe installed. Will have them look it over.

Did you go aftermarket downpipe?

The fill process requires two steps to be totally dead on correct when the pan is off, you need to do initial fill/gear cycle etc and level the fluid off at 103*f then spike the RPM to 2k and hold for 1-2 min to make sure the converter is totally filled, after that drive around for a little while to allow the thermostat to open if you have an external cooler. Then let sit and cool off again to bring temp back up to 103* for a final check

It may be incorrectly filled, 165* is FAR too low as they try to heat to 220* as fast as possible for correct flow/pumping losses.

Now I need to get the car detailed. The steering wheel, inside door grab handle, and console have a lot of grime on them from him not using gloves or washing up when getting in to operate the the car lol.
But at least it's home. I did apparently lean on the remote and open the trunk when I got in my truck to leave and head back to Utah. My app is showing the trunk open inside my garage lol. I hate how sensitive that button is on the fob.

when i go out into the garage to get into the hyundai i’m always annoyed when it’s locked and i have to go back inside to get the key. mine’s a ‘23 but for ‘25 at least they did implement ‘digital key’ where you can control the car with the phone. glad you got the car home. humor me but i’m a bit confused on your logistics. your bmw was stuck in arizona at a shop, right? but you drove your truck from nevada to utah? not sure why, and how did you get both vehicles back if you drove to it in arizona in the truck? i so confused.

I did buy an Active Autowerke downpipe with a high flow cat. It's important to me that I am able to pass smog without having to swap pipes every year to do it, as well as not wanting to have the catless smell(lady friends tend to not enjoy that much).
The car broke down in Northwest Arizona, about 90 minutes southeast of Vegas. I left it there with the mechanic through the holiday. I have spent the last week and half now in Southern Utah where my folks live. On Tuesday this week, I drove down to Arizona with my dad to get the car. Because the Grand canyon is in the way, I have to drive back through Vegas to go down there. I took my dad with me so he could drive my truck while I drove the BMW. From there we went to my house in Vegas, dropped the car off, and then returned to my parents house in Utah using my truck. I'll probably go back home to Vegas later this week
thanks! makes perfect sense. i didn’t read that your dad was with you (or missed it), but that must have been a good time spent with him i hope. i didn’t know if you had a trailer for the truck and brought the car back yourself, and didn’t get the utah connection, but all good now!
