Gas engines sound exactly like this.

Granted it's been a minute since I've ridden in a Tesla, but I don't recall there being an abundance of road noise. At least not enough to leave an impression on me. And that would have been a pre-Highland/Juniper model.

The other EV's i've been in(Mach E, Lucid Air) didn't seem to have any road noise either. These were brief rides and not on the freeway, however. Just surface street speeds(45-60) in Vegas.

The thing with EVs is that the drivetrains are so quiet and vibration-free that what little road noise there might be is more-easily heard. And, of course, much in the road-noise level depends on the type and condition of the tires....the more worn and the more-blocky the tread pattern is, the more likely you are to have increased road noise. The type and condition of the road-pavement can also make a huge difference.

Previous 3 and Y were pretty loud, the new ones are much better. The issue is what type of frequencies you hear. Without the drivetrain drone many people find the tire and wind noise stand out more.

They are about to take my money too.

Any opinions on their ceramic coating?

I haven't used it, but I heard it was good. The one that I am hearing the best buzz about right now is Pan's CLEAN. 8 Year coating. If I was going to do a coating right now thats what I would use

Previous gen 3 and y are not quiet. When my friend is in either of his I can immediately tell he’s driving by the background road noise.

Compared to what I'm used to yeah, they meter 6-8 DB higher and are noticeably louder. The new ones are fine for their class but nothing amazing

Bingo, and the new ones are still heavy on tire noise at all times and wind over 80. I have gas cars that are totally silent engine wise so it's not even a factor in comparison but against something like an ES etc then sure, the EVs don't have engine noise.

They do have more road noise and it's annoying

No gas cars are totally silent engine wise. There is noise being generated which masks or blocks out other noise.

So turning off the engine going 80 and showing no change on meter or able to hear anything at all means???

Can't hear it at idle to 2500 from inside plus unable to tell if running at speed is silent in my book. At that point it comes down to tire/road/wind noise

Exterior noise doesn't necessarily translate to interior noise. The latest generation Model 3 and Model Y do an excellent job keeping outside noise out of the cabin, be it road, tire, wind or environmental. Night and day compared to the prior generation.

I'll agree, but some were pretty close. I remember the classic silent-operation of large 60's/70s-vintage Cadillacs, Lincolns, and, more recently, some Lexus LS models. The old Buick "Nailhead" 401ci/6.6L V8 was also way up there on the quietness-scale.

I never disagreed with that, the old ones sucked to a very surprising degree. Like I said the new ones are passible, the only Teslas I really bothered to live with were all model Ss so in my head that was "normal" to the point the 3 I worked on had me thinking something HAD to be wrong. The new 3/Y is now appropriate for the class
