If you get serious about this, look at the next gen - X350, 2004-2009. I think that’s a prior gen X308. The X350s can be had for the same money in excellent shape. I have been SORELY tempted to get one, and someday I probably will.
The X350 was a superb version; absolute peak XJ generation IMO. Very good, improved, 6HP trans, peak V8 with the AJV8. Very good electrics (courtesy of Ford). Really VERY reliable cars, great ride, great looks. It all came together nicely in those years.
I just love the looks of these. I don't care much for the looks of one that came after it even though it was super nice too. I want to drive the old one around and see how it compares to the LS430.
Just the lines on that hood alone, damn. Jaguar knew what was up.
Like I said if that passed an inspection and drove well and I had more room at home I'd buy it......$4500 is peanuts, offer them that OTD. Done.

The only way easy quick way to tell the difference between the X308 and X350 is to know where the bumper turn signal lights are mounted (how I knew which it was at first glance). They are almost identical otherwise. I think you are thinking of the NEXT generation. That is when everything changed. X350 is still that look. X308 is a “decent” car but some body issues and frequent transmission issues because of the 5HP.
Well I found something even better…. This car I would make room for.
Athens is only 30 mins away…..
That's a nice one, there are a few near me but not in good shape like that. It's a shame because I want to try a 140 for a while before hunting for a 600 version

I liked the ones that were smaller inside (which is why they made the larger one). They all look good but......
HOLLLLY MOLLLLLY::
The did the best they could with the newest one but it doesn't quite have those looks.... "Sex on wheels" doesn't even begin to describe the above two cars.

It's possible. But you never know, these cars can be messes but they are STILL old school Benzes. I'll be able to tell if that's worth buying or not (or even considering) in 2 minutes. It has 180k on it. If it runs fine and doesn't need work I'd consider it. That's driveway jewelry. Black W140. Those 6s will run forever. If it looks really nice in person and drives fine and nothing big is wrong it wouldn't be the worst thing to blow a couple grand on.
A friend and I are going to look at it in a day or so. From the pics it looks very clean. Love the Zebrano wood the S320s had, they had the best looking wood in the cheapest S-Class. All the rest were burl.
I guess what I'm saying is I don't care if certain things are wrong with a $4,000 S-Class as long as it looks good and doesn't strand me. If could drive it around for a year or two and then dump it for 3 grand...
It's not like the SL that has to be perfect, and is never going anywhere.
You need to look into what it costs to keep a W140 on the road, that is nothing like your R129...thats one of the neediest cars on 4 wheels...
Lol, oh, I'm well aware.... I know W140s as well as any Benz, even mine.
4 grand though who cares, even if I could just cruise around in it for a couple years...that would be worth it. lol @Striker223 It IS NOTTTTT a car I would even dream of bringing up to spec unlike the SL. Just it would be cool to cruise around in a black W140. It's one of the baddest *** cars ever made.
While notoriously complex, W140s especially the 320s could "run ok" even with stuff wrong. I'm just saying it might not necessarily automatically be a pos. Or it could be. I'll know quickly either way when I see and start it.

Not only that but the work itself falls into "old knowledge" territory, it's not the same methods as newer cars and requires people to know how to perform those types of repairs. Someone who is a wizard on a W222 may very well have a hard time on a W140

Thats just it, you may very likely spend $4k and not have it be able to run at all...it could go belly up at any moment.180k miles, I wouldn't touch that thing with a 10 foot pole.

Good ole dealership!!!!
I mean hell, for 180k it looks well kept. That back seat area looks pretty much new. The paint looks good for a car with 180k.
Probably not, but hell that could be an S320 that runs well and fine...

Oh I wouldn't buy it unless I knew it was gonna last for quite a while.
