General Car Conversation 2025 - Part 2
Sweet spot for someone like me is 30-40k miles at 3-5 years old for $140-180k for a max spec FSSM, it's going to be my next 4 door car for sure.

How much cylinder wall wear would an almost polished out, but still visible cross-hatch imply? That's everywhere on the wall save for one (~20deg) vertical section that looks practically factory - on one of the non-thrust sides. 2GR-FSE, gs450h, 435k km (270k mi) 5th cylinder, compression is equal on all cylinders and the rest also have practically factory new cross-hatch. No score marks or anything serious-looking like that. I'm toying with the idea of new pistons + rings + hone (& chains/VVTi actuators/bearings/trans damper/heads/etc/etc, classic), since measured oil consumption does leave me wanting - 400ml/1000km on two 500km, sustained-ish 150kph/93mph run in 25-30c(80-ish f) weather - that's ~1qt/1500mi. Could be a bit less since I'm overestimating everything but it's still a bit excessive for my liking - used to be ~1qt/4000mi or something along the lines.
Rumor has it that VW will be celebrating the upcoming 25th anniversary of the Golf R by stuffing Audi's turbo 5-cylinder in it: https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/n...ylinder-engine
It will also get the RS3's mechanical diff and some other performance goodies. This will make the first time the US has gotten this engine in a hatchback, as only the sedan version of the RS3 has ever been imported here.
I love this, as the inline-5 makes great power (~400hp from the factory and very tune/mod friendly), barely affects chassis dynamics (wider and a bit heavier than the 4-cylinder, but sits in the same spot), and most importantly, sounds like a chainsaw at full rip.

Look at that exhaust. Is this a classic GT Mercedes or a riced out Civic?
This is a grave sin but half of the people alive don't even get it... YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUT REDUNDANT BADGE PLATES TWO INCHES BELOW THE (HUMONGOUS) BADGE. I don't understand how people don't get this, it looks just stupid. There are already two badges on that hood/grill. The R129 grill star is one of the biggest to go in a Mercedes, I mean... in that era at least
Also, this isn't anything on the owner but those headlights with the wipers...... the xenons look sooooo much better. It's what I mean about how Mercedes blended analog and digital (at the time) with the last R129s, old school high beams with opaque glass and then projector beam xenon headlights. Forget the silly wipers, they looked great at the time but by 2000 they were definitely out. I think 1980s MB when it comes to headlight wipers.
The headlights are pretty good though they don't swivel like in the Lexuses. The bright lights are ridiculous, halogen but crazy bright.
Other than that it looks clean, though. Nothing unfixable. That's about ideal miles, driven plenty but not too much.

The wipers at least work, compared to just spraying the headlights. You'll know if you drive often in winter sludge at night. There's a ski resort ~1h from me by car and I very often do night runs during the winter (sometimes 3 a week), the headlight washers on the 3GS do absolutely nothing.
Double badged. Lol
I always suspected headlight wipers don't do anything useful. Lol
