General Car Conversation 2024 - part 2
It will take me at least 15 years to hit 200k in my IS 500. I'm not worried about very high mileage stuff.
I bought the OHP ENET OBD2 adapter. It uses ethernet and then an adapter to USB-C to plug into my Android phone. I also bought a wifi OBD2 scanner with Bootmod3.
I've coded my car but really haven't changed much. Apparently my Head Unit can't be coded which is some of what I would like to change. My auto start/stop is already able to be persistently disabled without coding.
if I had to guess, I'm sitting somewhere around 420-430 HP and 450-470 lb/ft at the crank with the tune though. It's fun.

I will probably go the JB4 + downpipe + flex fuel route. Sending my ECU to another country to be unlocked doesn’t sit to well with me 😒 Far as coding I saw a few things I wouldn’t mind changing. I can get the M welcome screen upon startup🙃
That IS350 was beat to death, great little rocket but too small for both of us. It wasn't in super great cosmetic condition but it ran well. Sold it to the dealer and bought DJ (LX).
More proof that outright speed isn't neccerarily the most fun. That car did 0-60 in 4.9 seconds and I never drove it, it didn't do too much for me. It would dust our SL but driving the Merc with the big V8 is a million times more satisfying, not even remotely close, even if it is slower. That Lexus sounded like a vacuum cleaner.
155k.

Trust me I feel you on the V8 vs V6 lol. I can't go back to a V6 now and I loved my VQ V6's.
I also enjoyed VQ V6s, especially the original one. But no, it doesn't come close to a Lexus V8.
AJ, I'll give you recent example on V8 vs V6.
I was doing roughly 85 on a highway merge and a white VW Jetta attempted to merge. I stepped on it and I was doing 136 with no effort at all. I slowed down quickly lol. I can't imagine a C8 Vette or some crazy Porsche

Yeah that's amazing. My cars aren't nearly that fast but they all are great on the interstate. The Merc and LS430 could drive all day at 130 no sweat.
We hope to pick up an LC in the not too distant future so we'll have your V8 as well.
Yea in my 500. It's nuts.
I was doing roughly 90 near the Airport the other day. 95 is very flat and wide at the airport. A Kia K5/K3 or whatever blew by me doing 120 or something like I was standing still.

Does your exhaust bark at startup? :drools:
I've found after/during hard driving the Merc's exhaust is or seems louder at a stop. It's got a muscle car soundtrack, the V8 sounds almost American when pressed and that's a good thing.
It's not like yours but it has a perfect exhaust note, for me.

for some reason you get a single spare o-ring but only for that 1 size lol... either way just from it being at the top of the engine makes it a much less messy process than with the LS, you just need the pump
Like I said I'm way down in power, but oh yeah. The SL loves 100MPH. It tracks like a freight train. I've had it up to a little over 130, but it'll do 155. It's really an exhilarating car, especially with the top down.
A guy had such a problem with a Corolla and a Lexus GS430 which are both very, very reliable cars.... picked up a 200k mile flagship Audi and no issues?
BTW I don't need any suspension, it rides the exact same and wafts over bumps the same as it always has. Shocks and struts are good.
The Merc costs more to keep on the road than both Lexus vehicles, but it's not terrible. It's not a tech heavy car other than the top which if you maintain, it will last years and years.

AFS failure
Rack failure
ML amp failure
Lower ball joint failure
Sunroof motor failure
Shock failure all around
Timing belt needed replaced
Seat motor failure
Drivers rear window regulator failure and glass plastic holder failure
Water intrusion into trunk
Cat failures
Exhaust leak at manifolds and mid pipe
Trans pan leak and 3 snapped bolts requiring extraction and rethread
Rear diff output seal pass side
168k miles
Corolla
Heater core failure
Coil pack failure
Valve cover leak
Oil pan leak
Trans line leak
Trans pan leak
PCV failure
Pass CV axle failure
Rims bent on pass side
Lower control arm wear out early
Drivers inner tie rod
Parking brake sized while driving
Instrument cluster failure
Strut failure, front right went through hood
Timing chain stretch requiring replacement due to correlation code, that's the one that killed it.
186k miles
Audi now has more miles put on it than he put on the GS, his Passat is about to sail past the Corolla. The Passat has needed rear hatch struts and a rad fan clutch as the old one was squawking sometimes on start. The A8 has also needed hood struts and I had to replace one air line fitting in addition to mentioned items.
That's it. He keeps VERY detailed records over everything as well and the insurance cost savings alone have covered all his repairs and the entire purchase price of the Passat over the last year.

Do you have 2 piece rotors or something? Diameter? If not that's totally insane for soild type cast rotors of the size I would expect to see on a non performance S class......
