Ours in TN are $70 a car, but an extra $30 for personalized plates. Ever since we changed our plates to blue I swear I see 3-4xs more personalized plates than I did before.
The only tax here that sucks is sales tax at 9.75%. You get used to it (or are born here and are used to it) but it does sting a bit when you buy something that's really expensive like a $3000 TV or something. This sales tax applies to groceries, too. There is no state income tax and property taxes are a joke, mine are like $100 a month.
I have to pay over $1500 a year to buy tabs for my three cars. The GS and Tundra are around $600 each per year, and the Highlander a touch over $500 per year. On the upside, Washington State finally did away with inspections. They were required on cars over 5 years old, but they ended it because they said they were finding very few issues during the inspections.
What’s crazy is I see cars here that are less than 5 years old (usually Hyundais or Altimas) with missing bumpers and smashed windshields, bald tires. We need to bring back safety inspections regardless of age.

CA does not have safety inspections which I think is a huge fail. We only have emissions tests.
It varies. Usually, $30-$60. It’s not required for vehicles produced before 1976 and it’s not required for vehicles that are less than 8 years old. I haven’t had a daily driver that required it for the last decade. My AE86 will probably be a pain in the *** to smog.

It should be fine unless you're throwing emissions codes.

I haven’t a rare TRD header that my friend Herb told me about and they had it at the dealership in Long Beach. It was the only one in North America at the time so I bought it. It does not have a California Air Resources Board (CARB) sticker because TRD did not mass market these and subjecting these to the cost of certification in CA to sell 3 of them would not have been a wise business decision. It’s an automatic fail regardless of exhaust emissions because it doesn’t have the coveted sticker. I am just going to hang it on the wall in the garage and install the new factory manifold instead. The TRD header might give an extra 5 hp but I’m only going to be at about 155 hp anyway and the extra bump in hp would not matter to me one bit.
Yeah we have inspections when you sell/buy a used car. It’s actually kind of funny when you buy out your own leased car it has to be inspected.
You don’t have to get it inspected when you buy out your leased car. You only need to pay registration and title which isn’t much, around $300. No additional taxes either since we pay them all up front on the price of the car.

That wasnt true in any lease buyout I have ever been involved in, they have always needed to be inspected. If thats no longer the case thats a change. Bought my 98 LS400 out of the lease, had to be inspected. 2004 LS had to be inspected. 2003 ES had to be inspected. Helped one of my agents buy out her BMW X5 around like 2016...had to be inspected. They required her replace her windshield so it would pass inspection, she was really irritated about that.
No additional taxes of course because they were paid upfront.
EDIT:
Looking into this it does appear that an inspection is no longer required, but thats definitely a relatively new change:

I ended up buying out our last three leases so I could sell the cars privately and I wouldn’t have been happy if I had to get it inspected. There is a tag/title place I go to that is close to my house and it takes 10 minutes to get tags vs going to the MVA. Way better experience since it is so much quicker and the fee isn’t much. I don’t even go to the MVA to turn my tags in, I just drop it off at the place and pay them $10 for them to do it.
