How did you get in touch with the auto club? You used your cell phone. Without that I'm guessing you guys would have had to sleep in the van?? Even though your ensuing circumstances really really sucked, you used your cell phone immediately to call for help I imagine.
Virtually 100% of this nation has cell phone coverage...
I don't disagree that having no spare sucks, at all, though. I'm just not changing it lol.
Point is having a cell phone won’t necessarily save you from being stranded. If we had arrived at the WalMart 20 minutes later we would have been stranded there. We could have gotten a hotel room but we would have been on foot with our stuff and that’s not the point. The point is we wanted to be home, we didn’t want to sleep in the van or in a hotel. With a spare I could get home under any circumstances. I can have a tire changed myself in 20 minutes and be back on the road. I would let them change it too, but not if the wait is 3 hours.
And whether or not you have cell service depends on where you are traveling. Out west for instance there are still big areas with no service. Even on my way to WV there are areas where there is zero service.
And the only upside to not having a spare is it saved the car manufacturer $100. Doesn’t move the needle for me lol
So we were talking about kids destroying cars. I spent 2 hours yesterday cleaning the Pacifica up. We drove it to Baltimore yesterday but it was still clean, nobody ate and no dog.
My wife took the kids and the dog out today for Christmas card pictures. They drove maybe 20 miles. This is what it looks like now.

Time to pull out that built-in vacuum?...after picking up the larger stuff.
I'm thinking that maybe when the kids get old enough to drive in a few more years, they will start to take some more pride in the family vehicle, and have a desire to keep it cleaner. I remember, when I first started driving, at age 16 and 17, I couldn't stand the slightest speck of dust inside or not.

haha. I have been saying that forever. A full size spare just makes sense. I have them on both my SUVs with a matching wheel.
do you have them on your non-suvs like the matrix though? not everyone has the room for a full size spare, and almost no one offers them any longer except on very large vehicles or ones that can have one outside the car like a jeep.

why is a temp spare pointless? i've used them a couple of times over the years. beat waiting for a tow.

exactly, that's the way it is with most cars these days. neither of my cars have a spare. the lc500 has run flats and the ioniq 5 doesn't but comes with a 'fix a flat' type kit.

2 or 3 spares? what did you run over a police stop strip?

The hybrids don’t have the vacuum.
I would hope they would be cleaner by the time they are 16 lol
