General Car Conversation 2024 - part 1
Well I don’t doubt this but I wonder if the average person could “feel” the difference.
Before any other bolt on mods I flashed an OTS 93 tune on my track car and it was a noticeable difference.
Edit: I was using 93 prior to the tune but the reflash woke it up. 🌽 transformed it!!

$97
In my 08 during its 229,300 mile life with me it never got anything other than 87. I did experiment with non ethanol gas for a while but I was going out of my way to get it.
The average person is going to put the cheapest gas the engine calls for meaning if the salesperson says it can run regular that’s what they will pump.
Majority of everyone on Tundra forums say it can run and calls for 87 and say anything more is a waste of money. Not saying they are right
Feel isn't the reason I'm bringing it up, it's the fact it's leaning on the knock sensors aka it has constant low level knock the system is dialing back timing to stay in the allowable range. Allowable meaning will make it through warranty before consuming a lot of oil

Funny thing about that is I have some older ESs and Avalon's in my care and they all gain 5-7mpg and more power off 93 octane. Some of that I'm sure is due to the old knock sensors overacting, but the higher octane removes all of the timing pull.....
The one car I have that I know never pulls timing is the Jeep, since it can't. No knock sensor so it's full send no matter what fuel

I have to admit I was surprised the Denali needs premium.
6.2 knocks on 87, badly (if you're pushing it hard, at least). Midgrade it runs fine on, but I still use premium.
BTW capLess filler is the greatest thing ever.

I wouldn’t be surprised…the engineers said it requires Premium…they weren’t kidding lol. Why would you expect it would run okay on the wrong fuel? Other cars may run okay on the wrong fuel but you can’t expect they will.

I've been looking at trucks lately and the Sierra Denali is really impressing me.
It would have cost a fortune to make a significant retune or power bump for LX... Lexus didn't do that.
Your scenario is extreme.... that would be like putting diesel in a gas car.
Not sure why you think that, when it costs WELL under $1000 to get a bespoke tune developed for almost any engine out there. Yes Lexus would spend more than that making sure it works well for a wide range of samples. But we're talking low 5 figures. Not low 7 figures.
Said it before and I'll say it again and then drop it...
If I ever have any engine trouble or it blows, I'll report it.
There are people who have LXs with 300k that have never used a drop of premium.

We hear you, we just don’t agree with you. Why do you care what we think? You do you lol. My analogy isn’t extreme, both are ignoring the manufacturers recommendations. When you do that you get an unpredictable outcome. Might be fine, might not be fine.
I put the fuel in a car that the engineers say it needs for best performance. Full stop. You don’t and thats fine. It’s not only about the engine lasting for me, I want the best performance out of the car throughout my whole ownership. Thats why I use the best fuel, parts, fluids, that’s why I replace crappy OEM tires with good tires, etc. That’s me. Disagreeing with you doesn’t mean I don’t hear you.
Im cheap about some stuff too. I run on fumes to avoid filling up on a day that’s not Tuesday because Shell has 20c off premium. That saves me $2-4 a tank lol. I’m not going to use lower quality fuel or the wrong fuel as per the manufacturers recommendations to save money though.
