Having the battery under the seat is a poorly thought out design. I wonder what the Audi dealer book cost is for the replacement. The floor design in the second gen doesn't seem all that bad.
Doesn't seem poorly thought out at all. I just watched someone do it in just over 8 minutes, while explaining each and every step as he went. I assume the dealer charges an hour of book time, as that seems to be the minimum for pretty much anything.
Poorly-thought out design is the Chrysler cloud cars (Cirrus/Stratus/Sebring) that require removing the driver's side wheel and the inner fender to get access. Combines all the negatives of a shorter life from being exposed to both the engine and the elements, combined with incredibly tight access and lots of corrosion.
So you never had a rusted bolt or failed hold down on any of your cars bay mounted batteries?
nope. Never had an issue.

Looking up Q7. This is not a well thought out design. The passenger footwell design is much better

This makes it sound like you've never replaced a battery yourself. Is that correct? If so, not surprised you've never had an issue. But that doesn't mean the person who actually did the work didn't get to experience the joy of corroded terminals or rusty hold-downs.
I did two batteries last year, and I suspect Striker's done that many today. The super-accessible one in the engine compartment of my FIL's car was definitely more of a pain than the one buried in the corner of my E90s trunk, and based on what I've seen, also more of a pain than the one in the 1st gen Q7.
My Viper battery was behind the driver's side rear wheel in the rear bumper. Kind of a pain in the *** since you had to jack the car up and take off the rear wheel (which is huge and 13" wide) to get to the battery. On my GTR it is in the under the hood toward the back of the engine and is kind of a pain as well since you have to take off the cowl to get to it.

I have changed my own battery in my Matrix,. Was super easy. No issues. My 2004 4R is on its third battery and i alway do it during service. No issues. I did have my Corolla changed in a parking lot by roadside service and last oil change the dealer told they there was some corrosion on the terminals so it was a $40 service to clean it up. The floor design in the second Gen Q7 makes much better sense than under a seat

I am not against a trunk mounted battery at all. Many Toyotas and Lexus models have them mounted in the trunk. The under seat design is not a good idea IMO. There are a few Toyotas that have them under the rear seat.
