Default Detailing advice!!!!

I’ve got a 3GS in black. I’ve waxed my car plenty of times. Wax does last long but since it’s black I want to really get a “brand new” shiny look. The paint on car is still in good shape. What tricks or tools, types of wax , cream etc that I can use to brighten up the black color? A buffer wheel? Polish? Tools or machine please recommend. Trying to get it shiny without any swirl marks etc.

Use liquid SCRATCH-OUT on each panel, which will take out surface swirl-marks and generally remove the fading, and, then, if desired, put a fresh coat of wax on top of the SCRATCH-OUT. I find, though, that, just the SCRATCH OUT alone gives a super-slick surface and makes the water droplets bead up for quite a while......just like a fresh coat of wax.

Carnauba wax, from Brazil, has a long-standing-reputation for excellence.

Do a three stage correction after two bucket hand washing the car and claying at minimum. I would also foam with a few items and hit it with iron out before claying to make life easier.

Once you are done correcting wash it again and ceramic coat it.

I have learned a lot about detailing by spending significant time reading the many useful threads on Club Lexus' detailing forum. Link below:

FYI, scratch out will not accomplish any of the things it was attributed to do above.

In order to remove swirls you will need to machine compound the paint and polish it out. Scratch out is a decent hand polish for very minor small imperfections.

Too much about detailing to really teach you in one thread. I would recommend you start watching YouTube videos.

My point was Scratch Out is indeed good for minor and/or surface problems. The OP did not seem to indicate that his paint job was in that bad a condition that he needed something stronger like rubbing/polishing compound, which is abrasive and can really mess up the clearcoat.

Scratch Out is abrasive too. You need abrasives to remove scratches.

The abrasive in Scratch Out is very mild (but effective). I use it not only for vehicle-paint but things like jewelry, metal-polishing, silver, copper, etc......

That’s partly why it doesn’t do much. It’s all full of fillers which make it look like you have removed things that you didn’t actually remove.

Yes sir, you got that right!

There must be 10,000 car care products to choose from. Lol

I don't waste my time trying them all cuz the members on here always know and tell us what works and what doesn't.

Exactly. Older waxes are also fillers, the true test is hitting the panel with isopropyl to see what it actually looks like and working from there.

First of all wax on a black car that sees anytime in the sun will not last very long. Things have changed in the past 30 years with wax being less favored by detailing enthusiasts. If you really want to restore a black car( we used to say black isn’t a color it’s a second job) you have some research to do. After a proper washing, decontamination (clay bar),you’ll need machine help, orbital polisher, and some decent paint correction product. Orbitals can be used safely by most people, rotary polishers are another story as they are more powerful and can damage paint in the wrong hands. After paint correction you can explore some different sealants to protect your work, ceramic being one of them. I would suggest visiting a good detailing forum and do a lot of reading. IF you chose to do this yourself, you should be aware that to do it right will require some time and elbow grease. Good luck.
YMMV

What he said above!

I haven’t used a wax in at least 10 years.
