Hey everyone! New guy here from southern/central California. Just bought my 1993 SC300 5-speed about a week ago. Car is definitely a little rough on the outside and has some interior issues to be solved but overall it's still a gem to me. Engine and transmission ran fine but noticed the engine was leaking a light amount of coolant from the headgasket area. Decided to pull the engine out and refresh it. So far looks like I'll be going the NA-T route. Engine is already torn completely down and head has been decked do to warpage. Waiting to have block decked/honed on Monday. Will post my progress as time permits. Needing some TLC! Pretty clean for a 1993 with 178k Looks like the previous owner had the bottom seat skins reupholstered? Cant believe the car came with this! Pretty cool! Dont mind the paint marks they will be cleaned off Lol. Freshly decked head!
Look at all those parts just waiting to be put on. I can't wait! Not sure on how thick to go on the gakset since I had to have both the block and the head decked. So far I've got the 1.3mm TT 2JZ gakset. May send back and go with a 1.5mm instead ?? Thoughts would be appreciated. More parts.
Thank you both for the welcome! Here's some more progress for the day... Cleaned all the piston and rods today. Little worried though.. I cant tell if there was a coating on the skirts as some have come clean like this one pictures and others have a light grey color in appearance on the skirts. I didnt use anything that wouldve eaten the coating off.
It has been a couple of years since I figured out which OEM Toyota bearings I needed for my short block. I never learned the process that well at the time, instead relying on my local dealer to help me be sure I had the right bearings based on my block number, crank number and all the factory rod numbers.
Look at this link in my build thread (Post #306 on Page 21) and scroll down a bit past the initial pictures detailing oil pan turbo oil drain drilling/prep.
There you will see the notes I had for my own 2JZ block (a GTE block but the numbering process should be exactly the same to decipher) as well as all the relevant TSRM pages that I could find on how it is done. Nonetheless I erred on the side of caution by getting the folks at my dealer parts counter to help me be sure I had exactly the right bearing part numbers.
Ignore the comments in my thread on ACL bearings, etc. Unless you've got an engine builder whom you trust implicitly for their style and work, stick to the OEM Toyota bearings.
Also, don't forget to order a new OEM set of crank thrust bearings for the front and rear!
Thank you for your help! Reading your thread you ended up using 13041-46013-02 x6 for the rod bearings based on your "mark #" located on the rod caps. Looks like mine are all marked the same way so I will be ordering those as well. Again, thank you for your help!
Glad to help you out! Again, for me it's been a while since I went through the TSRM to figure out the bearings I needed. Even though I detailed the relevant TSRM pages in my build thread I'd have to sit down an study them all over again to make sense of them
Just be *absolutely* sure you have all the right bearings based on your engine markings. Even though your markings seem to line up with mine I still suggest going to a dealer parts counter to ask them to help you verify JUST to be sure you have the right ones on order. It can't hurt before you get the building process started. The OEM Toyota bearing clearances are fairly tight and you want to be 100% sure they're spot on and within factory spec.
Sorry it's been a while. Car is finished! Engine runs perfectly! The only down side is I'm pretty sure I'll need a new serpentine belt tensioner as it's making some odd noises coming from that area. Figures the one thing I didnt replace would end up going bad lol. Here are the rest of my pics.
