Fabricated legs for the engine, to get rid of the engine stand and allow for transmission attachment

Transferring the engine to the legs

They hold up great!

The first day in weeks with no rain or snow forecast. Everyone outside for a garage cleanup!

The custom transmission finally arrived. The project has been on hold waiting for this

The size difference is concerning, but I have seen SC300 builds with the 4L80. Hopefully it will fit with no cutting...

16 Ga. cover for the hole where the old shifter was

Adapter plate fitted

Some clearanceing to allow the wire harness to fit

Removing the bellhousing to hone the dowel pin holes to .6250". Both the engine and transmsission sides were a press fit, one needed to be a slip fit.

Back together, with aluminum torque converter adapter

Custom made "presser" to install the torque converter snout adapter. It was a .002" press fit.

Installed

The wood is preventing the torque converter from sliding off

Using the crane allowed for fine angle adjustment, and made installation a breeze

I feel like most people would have just swapped in the LS that trans used to mate with... But i like watching this a whole lot more 👍
man that engine balancer on your hoist had to be so nice when lining up that heavy @$$ trans!

keep that UZ alive! I swear 75% of people who ask if i have a 300 or 400 automatically ask if im gonna jz or ls swap it once i say 400. and the response is always why would i do that?
Nothing wrong with the UZ theyre great engines. As are the jz and ls.. But if youve got one to begin with why toss it for another?

Roughed in an adapter to use the factory P/N selector switch. Credit for this idea goes to @Idlefree who used something similar on his build.

Using a dial indicator I found the flex plate had a run out of 0.040", where the factory spec is 0.007. My spare plate has heavy rust on it, so engine installation is postponed while I wait for a new one from the dealer.

Finished PRNDL adapter

Mounting plate for the B&M shifter. The cut out is to allow a 4th bolt to go through the adapter plate into the car

Shifter fits well

This is the final fitment in the car, the surround needs a little trimming. I think the gear indicator on both the dash board and shifter surround will still work

Fitting the transmission has been a mission. I've had to cut out 2 sections of the body, and "massage" in 3-4 others with a 4lb sledge to fit it. In order to get a proper/stock drive shaft angle, it needs to tuck up tight into the car, with the pan's flange above the chassis. Each time an adjustment or cut out needs to be made, the engine and transmission need to be hauled out of the car with a jack and crane. As it sits now, everything fits but there is not enough space for the shifter to rotate. That will be up next!

I'm keen for a first start, to see if the engine has any issues from a garage assembly.

Shiny new flex plate

To give an idea of how high up the trans needs to be

Cut out for the shift rod and electrical plug

The SFI bell housing makes fitment even tighter

Wiring in new relays and fuses to power the LS coils

Man youre killin it! Great progress 👍
the taking the whole setup in and out over and over is always such a motivation killer for me after about the 3rd time.
How far are you from final fitment and fabbing up a mount?

I think I want to work on firing it up before getting the mount started. Hoping to have everything wrapped up in April

Thanks, this is a killer tip. I would be all over it if I did not need to pull the pan off to get access. It still might be necessary if I cant make enough space in the floor.

Started trans mount

Welded tube into the horizontal holes to support clamping force of the bolts

Shifter surround finished: Park position

1st gear

Took StillOEM's advice and installed a short shift shaft

All wrapped up. OEM transmission angle was 1.8 degrees, we're at 2.4 now. Pretty good!

low-profile cooler fittings, flexible dipstick

Getting there, intake manifold is back on

Went to do a first start, and the starter wouldn't turn over. Verified wire/signal integrity right up to the starter. A hammer didn't help either, the solenoid draws current but seems to be stuck. With the transmission adapter, the starter is an engine-out job. Currently prepping to pull everything again, and there is a re-man Denso unit on order

The amusing part is, I used the working starter motor out of my original engine to avoid such an issue.
