Got the head off. I have it all boxed up along with the new BC springs, and new stem seals. Just waiting for the new cams to arrive and then will be delivering it to the shop to get worked.
Engine looks pretty good. Going to try and clean some of the crud off the tops of the pistons. Cleaned of the middle two with a little brake cleaner and paper towel. Will move onto the other 4 another day. http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...2&d=1359086730 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...3&d=1359086730 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...4&d=1359086749 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...5&d=1359086749 |
Think I found the cause of my mysterious oil leak. Shouldn't there be more than 1 bolt holding the upper oil pan on?

I got the upper pan off. Got the pan and block surfaces cleaned up with a razor to get the old RTV off. Need to find a -10 fitting so I can have it welded to the pan. That way I never have to worry about that leaking. So if anyone has a -10 fitting, holla!
Also got the pain in the ass crank pully off. Damn thing is cracked. So looks like I need a new one. Heard the Titan one is pretty good so might just pick up one of those. http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1359318132 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...2&d=1359318132 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...0&d=1359318111 |
Wow a very common problem with these JZ engines.

Titan crank pulley on order.
Cams showed up today. I'm definitely happy so far. Great customer service, great turnaround time, and great price! http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1359419327 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1359419327 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1359419327 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1359419327 |
Looks good.. Lol.. I never understood how to read the cam degreeing charts..
Correct me if I'm wrong since your still using the stock cams and they operate best at TDC then after having them regrinded shouldn't they still operate best at TDC? |
Got the upper pan back from MAP. They cleaned it up in the hot tank, and welded on a -10AN for the turbo oil return. Thanks for the quick turnaround guys!
http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1359516188 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1359516188 Installed the upper oil pan with some RTV. Ace had perfect replacement bolts for my mysterious missing ones! Upper pan bolts all torqued to 6.5ft-lbs. Also got the lower pan on as well. Nice to be doing some reassembly rather than disassembly :) http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1359516188 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1359516188 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1359516188 Also dropped the head off, so hopefully have that back in a week or so! |
Titan crank pulley showed up today.
http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1359683741 I spent some time cleaning the deck surface of the block best I could. Once I was done I threw in the MAP Ultimate Duty head studs, thanks again guys :) That's pretty much it for today, kind of a lame update I know, slowly but surely. http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1359683741 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1359683741 |
This is an awesome build! Should be killer when it's done.
One question though, how do you plan to get a speedometer reading from the Nissan transmission? I could have sworn that they were different in the way that they read speed. |
^^^ He is on a standalone ems!

Titan pulley on. Pretty much just waiting on the head now to move forward.
http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...5&d=1359775171 As for speedometer, gunna just use a phone app for now until I figure something else out, lol. |
Looking good man. Keep up the good work

Still waiting on the head :( Maybe next week.
Came home to a bunch of stuff though, kind of felt like xmas! - LSD for the rear diff - SC300 flexplate (need it for the trans swap) - 350z transmission mount (got it to make a custom trans mount with) - New flywheel friction disc (thanks MAPerformance) to put on the used JWT flywheel I bought http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...2&d=1360365348 |

So I took the Titan pulley back off, because my dumb ass didn't think that I have to get all the timing stuff on and buttoned up first, haha oops.
So anyway, being new to this platform, I guess I'm not sure how to line up the crank for timing purposes. I look online, and it seems like there is supposed to maybe be a toothed plate behind the crank timing sprocket? My engine doesn't have that? I don't see any marks on anything at all to line up to anything? Also I replaced the hydraulic tensioner as well as the idler pulley for the T-Belt with new ones. Also found out that since the cams have about .040" ground off the base circle, apparently the standard shims from Toyota aren't big enough to compensate for that. So my head shop called up Schneider, and Schneider said that they need to install .040" lash pads. I have no idea what that is, but sure would have been nice if they would have mentioned that when I bought the cams, included them, something... So the shop ordered them up, so looking like my head will be done next week now. Well speak of the devil, just found this amazing sketch that I think will help! |
So today I decided I'm sick of waiting for my head and going to move forward. Using some old headstuds, I put the motor back up on the hoist. Took the flywheel off. Bolted up the adapter plate. Started to put the flexplate on. Shot Collins (adapter maker) an email about how exactly this flywheel adapter is supposed to go on. Calling it a night, will get back to it tomorrow and over the weekend!
Adapter on and flex plate on with bolts finger tight: http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1360896875 3 sets of hardware that came with the flywheel adapter. Pretty sure he said to just use one set, which will replace the actual flexplate bolts. waiting for confirmation http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1360896875 |
