Removing Light Swirls
 

Good Afternoon, everyone.

I've done lots of searching but am not finding a good, consistent answer, so I am reaching out for some help.

My 2019 GS needs some help. I picked it up last month and it was already covered in swirls. They are pretty light, and I didn't notice them until we had a nice sunny day, but they are there.

I always put a coating on my cars, typically CarPro CQuartz as I've had great results with it. I'm ready to do the same on my GS. Usually, when I do a polish before a coating, I have some deeper defects to polish out. But on the GS I need something fairly gentle. The color is Smokey Granite Mica (dark gray).

I have a DA polisher and plenty of experience, but would appreciate any suggestions on which pad and polish would be gentle, yet abrasive enough to remove swirls. Is using an orange pad with M100 too much? I also have 105 and 205.

M105 and 100 with a orange pad would be too much for light swirls, they are basically compounds, you would need a finishing polish and less aggressive pad to remove haze/micro swirls they cause.

I would go with M205 and a white pad and see what that does, should be able to get rid of the light swirls and finish down with that combo, may want to go with a lighter amount of M205 and a blue pad after that to really refine the finish before you add a ceramic coating. Remember you need a very clean finish before you apply the ceramic coating and finishing polishes have more oils. You'll want to thoroughly wash the car with Dawn, alcohol after every polish and then maybe use a Panel Wipe. I normally use Menzerna Final Polish II for a finish polish.

Thanks UDel. I was afraid just a straight polish wouldn't be enough to get the light swirls. I will take you suggestions and give it a try.

Out of the products you have, I would agree with Udel that M205 with a white pad would be the best approach. If there isn't enough cut, then M205 with orange followed by white wherever necessary.

Personally, I use carpro essence + a carpro gloss pad as my last step before coating a car.
