Carpet dye?
Anyone ever dyed their carpet? Ive been looking for a black carpet for my '00 LS but I've had no luck.
So I'm going to dye my beige carpet. It's out of the car and steam cleaned. Now I just have to figure out the best wat to tackle this.
Any thoughts?

not sure what the pro's use but I've tried to dye clothes before with ok results using that tintex stuff and hot water. I'm sure you can find some industrial dye online though. Probably need a large shallow pan or a tall narrow cylinder to mix it up at a high enough concentration for good colour penetration and allow the carpet to soak fully.
I'd also worry about colour fastness so maybe try it on a small sample and see how well the colour stays if it gets wet.

I've used Sem's product in the past, via a spray gun/compressor, and the results were pretty good. The main thing is the carpet must be REALLY clean, no sand or grit, and you have to spray very light coats so as to avoid wetting areas, and rake the (dried) pile in different directions for each light coat.
It was a long time ago but I remember the color held in there pretty strong.

OK.
Simply Spray = complete waste of time & money (for this project). 7 cans gave 1 light light coat on complete carpet. It really is for tye dyeing t-shirts etc.. Very thin and made a ****in mess.
RIT Dye = waste of time. I sprayed the **** out of the carpet but when I rinsed it in a couple hours most of it washed off. I figure the carpet is synthetic so the dye really had nothing to penetrate.
Dupicolor Vinyl & Fabric paint = good option but you gotta use a ****load. 1 can gave 1 light coat on half the carpet.
SEM Color Coat = by far the best option. 3 times as much coverage as Duplicolor so it more than justifies the added cost. It ain't comin' off with water.
I wish I had grabbed the SEM stuff from jump like I was told. DOH!
On a good note, I now have a completely black carpet. Pics to follow.
