Detailing my 2008 IS 350 SGM (Smoky Granite Mica)
I bought my 2008 IS 350 new in Jan 2009. Unfortunately, I haven't been very good at keeping it clean. Other than the complimentary washes at the dealer from my few visits so far, two major details have occurred, one in '09, the other in '10. Doing the next one tomorrow with some friends and hoping to start being better about it.
Here's the write up from my detail in Spring of last year (details and pics from @itsarchie who led everything):
Equipment used:
-Gilmour Foam Canon
-Dewalt Polisher
-California Blade
-Black Magic Engine Cleaner
-Black Magic Wheel Cleaner
-Simple Green
-Adam's Car Wash
-Rain X Car Wash
-Clay Magic Lube
-Clay Magic Blue Clay Bar
-Menzerna 203 (Green Pad)
-Menzerna PO85RD (Blue Pad)
-Collinite 476 Wax
-Stoner Invisible Glass Cleaner
At the time, The car's exterior condition was in excellent shape with the exception of a few scratches and swirls and some rock chips that have removed the paint to the metal and could not be fixed. Here are some before pictures:
The first thing done was the engine bay. It was fairly clean but dusty. All we did here was spray some engine cleaner on it and sprayed it and used a brush to loosen some of the dirt. Let the stuff sit for about 10 minutes before spraying off. No after pictures though.
While we waited for the engine cleaner to do its thing, the next step was to clean the wheels. Sprayed some Black Magic Wheel Cleaner and Simple Green, used a brush to loosen some of the caked on brake dust, then sprayed off. Didn't really spend as much time with the wheels.
Now its on to clean the body. Grabbed the Gilmour foam canon and mixed water in with Adam's Car Wash. Sprayed the entire car with the foam and let it sit and loosen the dirt down. Unfortunately, the hose that we used was leaking very bad so we couldn't really utilize the foam canon but it was still able to clean the car off fairly nicely.
After the foam was washed off, we proceeded to wash the car by hand using a soft microfiber cloth and bucket of water mixed with Rain X car wash. Results after the wash:
Time for claying:
While I clayed the car, my friend started tape prep the car. Progress after claying:
Started the polishing process using Menzerna 203 and a polisher with green pad running on 1000rpm and gradually increased to 1400rpm:
Quick shot after one side was finished with 203:
The 203 polish actually fixed a lot of the fine swirls and scratches on the car:
Once the whole car was finished with 203, we proceeded to perform to polish with PO85RD with a blue pad running on 1800rpm - 2000rpm:
Finally, once we finished machine polisher, we applied Collinite 476 by hand.
Here is the final result:
