Help! Leater torn on driver's side...
 

Hi, I'm a long time reader and first time poster. I own a black 98 sc400 w/ about 85k miles, bought it 3 years ago and have loved every minute of my driving experience since. I don't understand it, I've been taking good care of the leather with cleaning and conditioning and there is a 1" tear now on the driver's seat along a crack that was forming. I did a search through the posts and could not find an answer, is the best thing for this the dealership? Can I fix this myself with some leater repair kit? Thanks in advance

BTW - When I originally purchased the car I had narrowed it down to deciding between the SC or a used Supra turbo. I'm glad I went with the SC except for the fact that the Supra is holding it's value so well. Until the Infiniti G35 coupe came out I really didn't think any car came close. Anyway, drove a buddy of mine's the other day and it soooo reassured me that I wasn't missing out on anything. The ride, feel, and interior of the G35 didn't come close. And the SC's sleek exterior still hangs with any new car in it's class... Any other opinions?

You can try a leather repair kit. It will probably work. Unfortunately, the leather in these cars is not of the highest quality.

I bought that repair kit. It's crap that WILL peel no matter how you apply it. Save your money for new leather or new seats. Otherwise you spend youtime sanding out the repair kit's secondary damage.

Repair kits suck! Bought one from Target, took it back.:(

Its strange how a '98 developed the crack from normal wear and tear. Are you sure a zipper or rock didn't scrape against it?

I don't suggest using a leather DIY repair kit because as others have stated, they don't really work.

I do suggest you find a local leather repair shop and see what they can do for you.

I've called around here in the Dallas area and so far noone sells a leather repair kit, probably due to what everyone is posting here, that they don't work. Park Place Lexus did mention a place they send their work out to but I did not find a listing and I did not get a number.

The search continues, I'm pretty much sure it was due to wear and tear it is torn right on a crease that was developing from sitting and now it has grown another 1 1/2" in 4 days on the same crease. Anyone know of a way I can at least stop it from continuing for the time being?

Crazy Glue (the one made for fabric etc.) will keeep it together in the interim. Many have used it with success in these instances, until they can get a new piece sewn in. :)
