As for me, it was $,1800 to replace the two rear full brake components - rotors, etc.

I now believe that the culprit was a broken parking brake cables that my son and i have a habit of using. I didn't get this part replaced since the dealer wanted another $600. I'll have a look at this if I can DIY in the spring. I wedged a screw driver under the parking brake pedal so it can't engage again.

A bit scary anecdote is that on the day of the appointment, about two kilometers away from the dealer, brakes started to fade. I had to use four-way flashers and put the S-transmission into 2 or 3 to use engine braking for that 2-kM stretch of road. Whew!

So now rears should be good for another 10 years (except for the usual normal wear). For climates using road salt (and with new teenage drivers), I'd probably now recommend lubricating the pins annually and/or replacing the pins every few years.

 

I just joined this forum and read this post. The torque specs you posted are for an RX330. Are these the same specs for the RX350? We have a 2009. Thanks for the information.

Hello: I am new to this forum. I have been reading on how to replace the rear brakes.
I plan to replace the rear pads on my 2006 Rx 330. Is there anything different on the 2006 model. That I should be aware of?. I am tired of making the local Lexus dealer richer. I follow instructions to the letter.
Is there a link that tells me torque specs for bolts, grease points and materials needed for this job? Thanking everyone in advance.

Suggest you get your supplies at Sewell (we have a great discount) and then DIY.

 

I want to thank all the contributors to this DIY forum. I changed the oil and filter because of the instruction provided .
I broke 3 plastic clips, but that was my fault for not being careful. I will attempt front and rear brakes next. The OEM suppliers for this forum have a decent price for parts. I am grateful for everyone that has made this possible.

Welcome to Club Lexus, loco4diy. Those plastic clips by now were probably a bit fragile with time and elements and even those of us who are used to how they work would probably have broken one or two by now. Nothing to worry about as they are easily replaced.

 

What happens if you don't torque these as per the specs you mentioned?

If you do not torque correctly on the caliper bolts, you will apply uneven force to the caliper, leading to warping, will eventually exhibit increasing vibration when braking.

True test is while running at 60 mph, apply brakes suddenly, if you begin to shrudder/vibrate, there you go warped rotors!

The reason is I have been there. 77 ft-lbs, nothing more, nothing less. For Slider bolts, 25 ft-lbs.
