V10 Supercar Rev Battle: Lexus LFA vs Porsche Carrera GT
Crank up your speakers and listen as the Lexus LFA sings its V10 song for three and a half glorious minutes.
The Lexus LFA and Porsche Carrera GT will go down in history as two of the greatest supercars of all-time. They have exotic looks, limited production numbers, outstanding performance and cost a fortune. However, those may not be the greatest attributes for either of these cars. Above all, where these cars really shine is with the spine-tingling sound, they emit from their powerful V10 engines. There are plenty of sportscars that sound good, but when you hear an LFA you stop what you are doing. Well, get ready to stop what you were doing and indulge yourself for the next few minutes.
On the Supercar Driver YouTube channel a rev battle was just posted. Not any rev battle, but a rev battle between these amazing supercars. After a few back-to-back revs in the garage, the video moves to the open road. This is where it really gets exciting. For a couple minutes, the LFA is free to belt out beautiful music from its triple exhaust outlets. Running up and down the gears, acceleration and driving by, you get to hear it all. It sounds magnificent. The incredible thing is, that no matter how good the recording equipment is the sound is always better in real life. So, if it sounds this incredible through your iPhone, just imagine being within ear shot as this video was shot.
The LFA is powered by a normally aspirated V10. Not many cars use that powerplant configuration any longer. That in itself makes the car unique. But even in the world of this rare configuration, the LFA V10 stands apart. Lexus set out to design an engine that had an exceptionally light internal weight so it could rev quickly. Forged aluminum pistons, forged titanium connecting rods, and solid titanium valves were used to achieve this goal. Mission accomplished. From idle speed, you can tap the throttle and hit the 9,000 rpm redline in about 0.6-seconds. It was so quick to rev that the car needed a digital dash because no analog dials would be able to keep up. That is what gives this car that distinct Formula One race car sound.
Actually, the LFA sounds better than a modern-day F1 car. F1 ditched the V10 engines about 15 years ago. Today they have tiny V6 turbo engines, and in the sound department the LFA will put them to shame. The Carrera GT in the beginning of the video is a worthy adversary in the sound department. However, hearing the Lexus run through the gears on the open road is truly one of life’s great gifts to the auto enthusiast. It is worth listening to this clip on the best audio setup you have available to you. There is no way you can watch this just once.
In conclusion, there is not really a loser in this rev battle as both cars are at the top of their field. However, there is a clear winner and that is us. Having a tough day at work and need a quick break? Play this clip. Have an argument with your significant other? Play this clip. Sitting around on a Wednesday afternoon with nothing to do? Play this clip. It will soothe what ails you and remind you what a fantastic escape cars can be. If you are one of the lucky 500 LFA owners, please go out and drive and make more videos like this for the rest of us. Thank you.
