Looking for a Used Lexus IS F? Here’s What to Look For

Lexus IS F

The used Lexus IS F market is hot, but full of potential pitfalls. So, lean on the expert advice of our resident Club Lexus members!

Even though it’s been out of production for years now, the Lexus IS F remains wildly popular. And that’s really not at all surprising. This was a car that features rear-wheel drive, a V8, and typical Lexus luxury. It was and still is one of the very best sports sedans in existence. This ongoing popularity has also made the Lexus IS F a frequent target of Club Lexus members. But like any used car, there are plenty of things to look out for when shopping for one. And those little niggles are well covered in this recent thread.

“I’m considering buying a used Lexus IS F,” said Johan87. “I am currently doing research on the car. Any tips on what to look for when buying one?”

Unsurprisingly, lots of members chime in with loads of great advice. Starting with Jwconeil.

“Service records are available through Lexus if you have a VIN. 2010+ have an LSD and 2012+ have smoother suspensions and are highly sought after. There are many more 2008-09 models out there. But they don’t have LSD and the ride isn’t as good.”

Others, including Avalon786, don’t have any issues with those earlier models, however.

“I don’t find the ride all that bad in my 2009. So don’t write those off. I love the handling. LSD would be nice, but thus far I haven’t felt at a disadvantage without one. But in all honesty, this isn’t my autocross or track car.”

Then, winterturb goes into a little more detail with some potential warning signs.

“The cars are really bullet proof. Look for the typical body damage issues, overspray, aligned seams. Run through the paddle shifters and ensure they are smooth. Look for play in the steering, pulling left or right, and road rash on the wheels.

Maintenance records are a must. A $250 pre-purchase inspection at a Lexus dealer would be money well spent. Buy one, you will not regret it. Great cars in every way. In my opinion, I would stay clear of anything that has an aftermarket intake mod. Have seen many cars with dusted rings due to not using the correct air filters.”

But above all, TheAcclude recommends acting quickly when you do find the Lexus IS F of your dreams.

“Best advice I received and took (after missing out on two sold within days). When you find one you really want, jump on it immediately.”

Sound advice, indeed. Be sure and check out the dozens of recommendations by heading over here. And while you’re there, drop any knowledge you have regarding the Lexus IS F and help a fellow member out!
