Lexus Announces Plans to Produce the NX Crossover in Canada
Toyota’s facility in Ontario will begin producing the NX crossover in early 2022.
Starting in early 2022, Lexus will produce its NX crossover at Toyota’s facility in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, reports Bloomberg.
“Building on our recent Toyota RAV4 announcement and our recent facility modernization investments, we are excited to announce that TMMC has been selected to produce the popular Lexus NX and Lexus NX Hybrid models for the entire North American market,” said Fred Volf, the President of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada.
“Today is a great day for Toyota, for Cambridge, and for Canada,” said Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada. “Canadian auto workers are among the world’s best, and they have the skills and know how to design and build cars that meet the needs of people today and tomorrow. Toyota’s new commitment to its Cambridge facility is a vote of confidence in our auto sector and will help Canada lead in the new high-tech economy of the future.”
Toyota is Canada’s largest automotive manufacturer, and the Japanese conglomerate operates two vehicle manufacturing plants in Ontario. One of those plants is in Cambridge, and the other is in Woodstock. The Lexus RX, the Lexus RX Hybrid and the Toyota RAV4 vehicles are produced at the facility in Cambridge. In 2003, the Cambridge facility became the first Toyota plant outside of Japan to produce a Lexus vehicle.
Moving on, the Lexus NX competes with crossovers such as the Acura RDX, the BMW X3, the Mercedes-Benz GLC, the Jaguar F-Pace and the Volvo XC60. The NX’s gas variant has an MSRP of $36,485. Meanwhile, the NX Hybrid has a starting price of $38,835. The gas option features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid’s powertrain produces 194 horsepower.
Lexus sold 62,079 units of the NX in America in 2018, and it was the company’s second-best-selling vehicle for the year.
