Lexus/Toyota Dominate J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study
More than half of eligible Lexus, Toyota models receive segment awards in 2024 U.S. J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study.
One of the main reasons that people are drawn to Lexus and Toyota vehicles is their reputation for reliability. That reputation was further solidified today with the release of the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. 16 of the 17 eligible Lexus and Toyota models ranked in the top three of their segments. 9 of those 17 eligible models were at the top of their segment. The combined 9 wins is the most by any automaker since 2017 when Lexus/Toyota combined for 10 awards. Lexus claimed the overall top spot with a score of 135 problems per 100 vehicles. Toyota took second place with a score of 147 problems per 100 vehicles. The industry average was 190 problems per 100 vehicles.
The J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) has been around for 35 years. The VDS “covers 184 specific problem areas across nine major vehicle categories: climate; driving assistance; driving experience; exterior; features/controls/displays; infotainment; interior; powertrain; and seats. The 2024 VDS is based on responses from 30,595 original purchasers and lessees of new 2021 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. The survey was conducted from August through November 2023.”

Overall Findings
Obviously, Lexus and Toyota dominated the VDS. If you want to see the full results of the study, click HERE. Aside from the performance of Lexus and Toyota there were some other interesting findings as part of the VDS. Some of those interesting findings are that electrified vehicles are more problematic than others. Infotainment system issues lead the way in problems. 49.1 problems per 100 vehicles are reported due to the infotainment system. That is nearly double the problems of the next highest category. That aside, no vehicle is ever going to be perfect. Problems are always going to pop up. However, if you purchase a new Lexus or Toyota the number of problems that you are likely to experience is far less than other brands.
