Lexus Owner’s ‘Administrative Oversight’ Leads to Hefty Fine
Lame excuses typically don’t fly in court. And blaming your wife isn’t going to fly at home, either.
We must admit, we loathe people who choose to drive without insurance. Mostly because it forces us law abiding citizens to pay more than our fair share. Obviously, insurance isn’t cheap these days. But it does give us a little peace of mind in the event that something bad happens. And while most uninsured drivers take the risk because of financial issues, others come up with more “creative” excuses. But even that didn’t save one particular Lexus owner from a hefty fine.
Richard John Charles Wakeham of the U.K. dependent Channel Island of Jersey used one of the more creative excuses we’ve heard after getting busted without insurance recently. According to the Jersey Evening Post, Wakeham described his negligence as an “administrative oversight.” Even better, he blamed his wife. Which probably resulted in consequences much worse than a simple fine.
“I received final notice to insure my car shortly before I went abroad,” Wakeham told the court. “Unfortunately, my wife reorganized my paperwork while I was out of the Island on business.” Ouch.
Unlike here in the states, uninsured Jersey residents are easy to pick out from the crowd. Their insurance registration date is clearly posted on the windshield, which makes it pretty hard to get away with. And when authorities noticed the expired status on Wakeham’s Lexus, they slapped him with a nearly $2,000 fine.
So let this serve as an important lesson to those who dare drive around without insurance. Or those who publicly blame negligence on their wives. Neither of them is a good idea, and both can be quite costly. Whether you’re talking about money or anything else.
