Lexus GXOR Concept is Rugged and Off-Road Ready
Customized Lexus SUV transformed into the luxury, off-road beast of our dreams.
Serious off-roading and Lexus are generally not as commonly associated as they are with say, Jeep and off-roading. But with the GXOR concept that Lexus is showing off to the public at the L.A. Auto Show from November 22-December 1, the company known for beautiful and comfortable luxury vehicles is aiming to change that perception. Lexus didn’t mess with the basic design of the 2019 GX460 on which the vehicle is based, instead focusing on adding a bevy of parts to make it look far more rugged. But it’s not all looks, as the concept features upgrades that also make it more suited for driving in the great outdoors.
The exterior of the SUV has been finished in a stylish, matte grey color. Mounted to the CBI custom “stealth” bumper at the front is a 9.5-inch warn winch. The chrome that normally resides across the top of the grill has been eliminated as well. Continuing down the passenger side of the body Lexus installed a Safari snorkel, which should come in handy if the driver should ever find themselves crossing a river or a body of water.
Though the display vehicle was locked, leaving the interior away from prying eyes, here Lexus added a Goose Gear custom drawer system for storage needs as well as a National Luna refrigerator to keep food and drinks fresh for those long, off-road excursions. There are also AluBox storage containers and for those times when you need to communicate with the outside world, a ICOM 5100A HAM radio.
The suspension on the Lexus GXOR Concept has been upgraded with the always excellent components from 4×4 specialists ICON, who provided a lift kit with remote reservoirs. There are also ICON billet control arms with Delta Joints. OEM Lexus F Sport wheels were used for the concept, in this case wrapped in heavy duty General Tire Grabber X3 rubber sized in a generous 275/70-18 at all four corners. The brakes have also been upgraded and now utilize a REDARC Tow-Pro brake controller.
It appears that Lexus left the GXOR’s drivetrain alone, which is already pretty impressive with its 4.6-liter V8 that pumps out 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque. And of course mounted to the rear hatch is a special GXOR badge. Lexus SUV owners have been customizing their vehicles for years, and it’s great to see the company recognizing this and offering something to owners who do more than city driving.
