Lexus LC 500 and 500h: ‘Impressive Machines,’ Say Critics
Consumer Reports sums up Lexus’ latest as ‘top-notch.’
Lexus has always gone toe-to-toe with the best from Europe, but the Japanese automaker raises the stakes with the new Lexus LC 500 and LC 500h. The immense amount of work that went into perfecting the two cars has clearly paid off, as Consumer Reports raves about the two vehicles in a new review.
The difference between the LC 500 and LC 500h is the powertrain underneath the gorgeous exterior. And the 5.0-liter V8 engine that’s paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission in the regular LC 500 is magical. “This brawny engine delivers plenty of linear, effortless power and an appropriate bravado-filled soundtrack,” says Consumer Reports. “The transmission shifts smoothly and decisively, and the exhaust is tuned to give a short, satisfying blast during upshifts with wide-open throttle.”
The engine in the LC 500h is a 3.5-liter V6 and an electric drive, that, as the outlet puts it, doesn’t behave like a hybrid, which is high praise. “Instead, this 354-hp powerplant uses what Toyota calls a ‘multistage’ hybrid that essentially simulates a 10-speed automatic, giving the car a more conventional feel that typically associated with a hybrid,” says Consumer Reports.
Both cars are touted as sports cars, and Consumer Reports finds that the cars complete sporty tasks with ease, saying, “…this Lexus carves up curves willingly and remains flat when pushed.” And the interior, well the magazine sums that up perfectly, too.
“Fit and finish is top-notch with the requisite high-quality stitching, soft-touch materials, and suede surfaces. The cabin is particularly inviting in tan colors.”
The only downside that Consumer Reports claims regarding the LC 500 and LC 500h are its navigation functions, which the outlet finds frustrating to use. That’s a small gripe to live with, and as Consumer Reports says overall about the sports cars, it is still “a stylish, capable, and compelling luxury coupe.”
