Why bother with the poor build quality of a Tesla when you can just slam a massive screen in the dash of your Lexus?

Let’s face it, there is a lot to love about the machines Tesla builds. From the bonkers speed and performance to the high-tech interior treatments, Elon Musk’s little car company is making some amazing things. What isn’t amazing is how well they are built. Uneven panel gaps, rattling trim and more all plague the Model S and Model X. So what if you are someone who loves the perfection and durability of your Lexus, but you want a bit of that Lexus technology swagger? Well, if you are aristo1987  in the forums, you buy this massive 10-inch infotainment screen for your dash.

Yeah, we know, it looks pretty amazing.

The stereo replacement is from a company called Pheonix Android Radios, and it is a 10” android tablet that is equipped with custom mounting hardware and software to install and integrate it into your particular car. For Lexus owners, they have GS, IS, ES and GX units on sale.

As you might expect with something like this, the forum got pretty busy with questions and remarks about the upgrade. The thread is now eight pages deep, and there is a lot of info to share both on tips, tricks, and problems.

Let’s do the problems first.

For starters, as you may have noticed, the screen is so big it replaces the climate controls. The screen features replacement controls, but due to some sort of issue, the temperature will only show “HI” or “LO.” The temperature control still appears to work, it just doesn’t show the degree you have selected. Fan control and all other functions operate as expected.

For those of you with factory backup cameras, you’re out of luck for integration. You’ll need to pick up an aftermarket unit to use. Also, for anyone who is impatient, since this is an Android tablet, boot times are not stellar. It can be between 20 and 30 seconds for the system to be ready.

But those drawbacks aside, there is a lot here to love. Since it’s a full-featured tablet, you can do tons of stuff that no normal infotainment manages. Do you want an integrated navigation system powered by Waze? Just install the app and go. Native control and integration of Spotify? Yeah you can install that too. If you find yourself stuck in a parking lot waiting for someone, you can even load up Chrome and browse over to Club Lexus, right there in your dash. Also, for all of you diagnostic and tuning junkies, a Bluetooth OBDII reader can be connected directly, so you have access to all of your readouts and functions right there in the dash.

This system won’t be ideal for everyone, of course. The install can be a bit tedious, and the initial setup takes some work to get everything optimized and ready for daily usage, but if you want to make your older car feel new, we can’t think of a better way to make it happen.
