Seven-Seat Lexus RX L to Debut in October?

2017 Lexus RX Sport

New RX with a third row may be revealed at Tokyo Auto Show.

For luxury car makers, crossover vehicles have turned into big business. People love the space of a small SUV, and the feel of a luxury sedan, so it’s obvious why these vehicles are selling so well. While most of the competition already sells crossovers with third-row seating, Lexus has trailed behind. That is, until now.

According to a report from Motor Authority, Lexus is actively testing a new version of the Lexus RX, dubbed the RX L, which comes with third-row seating. Motor Authority has already gotten their hands on some spy images, showing the crossover in action, and they also believe that Lexus will fully unveil this new vehicle at the upcoming 2017 Tokyo Auto Show in October.

With the rumored RX L, it looks like Lexus is going to keep the same look and feel of the RX, but with just a few minor changes. From the side, you can see that the addition of the third-row reduces the curved look in the rear of the vehicle. Clearly, you need headroom for those riding in the back! Other than that, at first glance, you’d be hard-pressed to find any glaring differences.

While this is definitely exciting news for fans of the RX, it shouldn’t be all that surprising. As Motor Authority points out, Audi, Infinity, and Volvo already have their own 7-seater crossovers. So, it appears that Lexus is playing a bit of catch-up. However, that doesn’t dampen the excitement as the RX has been the best-selling vehicle in Lexus’ lineup, and for good reason.

As we’ve pointed out in our review of the RX 450h, the vehicle is one of best, if not the best, all-around vehicle that Lexus manufactures. The RX has the look and feel of a luxury vehicle while offering much-needed space.

We’ll keep you posted as we expect more news to come out in the coming weeks about the new RX L.
